This a pic I shot three years ago in Scotland— my iPhone time-hopped the memory...

I remember walking one of the hills in Scotland, on one of our days off (we were shooting some film + sightseeing for a multi-year project my friend Ernie is doing about revivalism + church history + more).

I always thought sheep were clean...

... until we took that hill.

🐑🐑🐑

Don’t get me wrong. Lots of great scenery up that hill.

And lush vegetation everywhere, this grass that would make anyone yard-boy, golfer, landscaper... anyone who likes greenery... totally jealous.

But the ground is full of little p**p nuggets everywhere.

Literally, everywhere.

You can hardly walk without pouncing on one, no matter how hard you try to avoid it.

(I took an up-close pic... it seemed, up close, that there was more brown than green.).

💩💩💩

Turns out, sheep are nasty. There’s poo and shed wool everyone (zoom the pic and you’ll see).

They’re not the most brilliant animals in the Animal Kingdom (that’s saying it *nicely— they’re outright stupid, prone to wander, easily falling into cracks, crevices, off ledges, getting themselves stuck, placing themselves RIGHT IN FRONT of their prey, etc...). And they’re dirty.

But the ground is grand... and the views are good...

... well, because of the sheep.

💩💩💩

Every now and then, I see kids and people swirling my house like vultures— many times while I’m trying to finish a project or even rest after completing one…

“No sheep, no poo...” I think…

Or, I ponder it as I see another pair of worn socks resting in a random place, more food on the floor, unmade beds…

And— as Solomon wrote... Proverbs 14:4 outlines it— “Where no oxen are, the trough is clean; but increase comes by the strength of an ox...”.

That is, you can have chaos and beauty— BOTH. But, you can’t have one without the other...

No sheep = no @*#($*@#$.

🐑🐑🐑

But...

No poo = no fertilizer to cause the growth.

No ox = clean stable.

Clean stable = no work, no production, no output, no purpose, no glory...

Such is every area of life, right?

❌ Freedom isn’t found in hoping no one finds out about the clutter in your past. Even if your past is fairly present.

No.

✅ Freedom is found when it’s in the open, when there’s nothing more to hide.

That bold audacity is what strips the enemy of his power.

💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥

The back story, a la the great poet Eminem.

One weekend I skimmed our Netflix suggestions and zoned-in on 8 Mile, a film in which rapper Eminem plays Jimmy Smith, Jr., a young man who desperately wants to leave the boundaries of Detroit and move towards his dreams and destiny.

Jimmy finds himself competing in a rap contest, the kind which pits two artists against each other. The rules are somewhat strange: the rapper who insults the other the most wins.

So, with the beat blaring behind them, artists accuse one another of their public flaws and hidden failures.

During the final showdown, Jimmy flips the script. Rather than insulting his opponent, he focuses more on revealing all of his own faults. He raps about his poverty, the fact that he is of a different race, the truth that his girlfriend cheated on him… that he got jumped and robbed a few days ago.

In doing so, he effectively disarms the enemy, stripping him of his complete arsenal of ammunition. When he’s finished, there's nothing else that can be said.

He concludes his routine, taunting, “Now tell them something the don’t know about me.”.

The opponent grows more embarrassed by the moment. Eminem tosses him the mic, but he actually hands the mic over.

👉 There’s nothing more to say.

👉 There’s nothing left to accuse.

Eminem stripped the enemy of his power by saying everything that could be said about him on his own.

💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥

To quote Jesus, “This accuser has nothing on me” (John 14:30).

Turns out, grace covers it.

It makes you righteous.

And the righteous are bold as a lion (Proverbs 28:1).

They don’t hide…

B/c grace has (already) covered it…

The pic from a few weeks ago— when I forgot to post the Top 7— I took an EXTENDED run through the neighborhood…

www.Jenkins.tv/blog/10-10

… and went a LOT farther than I planned.

⭐️

Along the way, , I realized one of the mindsets / mental blocks I have. Namely, this: if I don’t get something *done by 7-8am (i.e., my morning routine, including exercise), I just assume it’s not going to happen that day.

This week, I woke up late— a few days (read: late = 8am, 8:30am).

I dwelled to go run, anyway…

Or workout.

Or whatever I had planned for that morning…

⭐️

I found myself running the “longer loop” here near my house… it takes my past Lifetime Fitness, Slice Pizza, around Acton Road, and through the old Altadena Golf Course…

The golf course has been closed for years, but still has all of its golf cart roads. I run those.

Except this time.

I ran over the small hill that connects one side of the course to the other and discovered the entire road was flooded.

No problem. I just took a small detour up a hill, hiked 50-60 feet, and then got back on the trail…

But then the trail went into a FIELD that was water-logged.

No problem. Run sideways through the “dry” side of the field…

Before long, I discovered— after a few miles of running the course— that EVERY bridge I COULD use to cross back to my house was flooded…

I finally took a short-cut through a random backyard, to find my way back to a street…

Of course, I stopped to snap a pic as a I (finally) made my way back to cross the Cahaba River and turn Into the neighborhood, surprised again that the river was so far “above” the normal water level…

⭐️

In the end, it was a great run…

… lots of out of the way, figure-it-out moments…

… lots of open space to mentally process and work through a few projects, and the next steps on each…

Gotta quick free + easy tool for you…
.
For the past 18 months or so I’ve been working on a “PTSD project,” a book + courses I put together with my friend Bob Waldrep of Crosswinds Foundation for Faith & Culture…
.
… that’s a longer story for another time…
.
We’ve taught the “PTSD” course a few times now (it covers WAY more than Post Traumatic Stress, but you get the idea), and I’ve created material from the trenches of my own journey, realizing that emotional wholeness is just as important as physical health + spiritual vitality + relational transparency…
.
(It’s a longer story for a future date, but I remember listening to a LONNNGGGG, awesome audiobook about emotional health while on a 10-mile run around Cancun just about 45 days before I got whammied by the EXACT. SAME. STUFF.).
.
Back to the point…
.
Most people will NEVER “qualify” for a PTSD diagnosis. And they shouldn’t.
.
Face it —>> that thing could label you for the rest of your life, and, it DOES merit a high bar, b/c it’s a real issue, a real thing… we don’t need to dilute it by making it “available” to the masses.
.
But MOST people could benefit from some degree of emotional help… so that they can walk into more health.
.
But how do you know where to walk?.
.
And how you know where to begin…?.
.
You look at the standards…
.
Here’s a free 10-question self-assessment, based on questions Bob & I pulled from the VA while we were pounding out the text and pouring through the research for Warrior Hope (the workbook + manual for the “PTSD” class).
.
Take a look…
.
This one is eye-opening…
.
And it’s super-helpful as you evaluate your next best steps towards walking in TOTAL HEALTH…
.
…. health that involves your body, your soul, your spirit…

Hard to drive forward when you’re looking over your shoulder, or constantly worried about what’s coming up on the right or the left…

Hard to live that way, too.

King Solomon said, “The righteous are as bold as a lion.” The flip side, he wrote, is that “the wicked flee when no one pursues” (Proverbs 28:1).

Let the past go. The good, the bad… and the (proverbial) ugly. All of it.

When you realize your identity isn't found in the great stuff you’ve done nor is it defined by you at your worst, you can be bold. You sense a humble, tender confidence swelling inside you- one not based on your perfection or lack of flaws but based on the notion that there’s nothing to hide. You’ve owned your story, flaws and all…

I remember the days of constantly looking over my shoulder, always wondering when life might come unzipped. Constant anxiety sucks.

When there are holes in your story, it’s easy to hide. You want to hide. The problem, though, is that hiding makes things worse and more tense. Pressure builds beneath the surface. Sooner or later, whatever is inside surfaces.

King Solomon (a guy with a lot of clutter in the closet) ALSO wrote, “One who covers his transgressions will not prosper, but whoever confesses them finds mercy” (Proverbs 28:13 TLV).

That’s the magic thing we want: mercy.

Grace.

Freedom.

It’s time to claim yours.

When we own our flaws, we allow grace to crash in and we simultaneously stop the enemy’s accusations. The flip side is this: when we cover things, we push freedom to the side. It always remains available, but it’s impossible to grab hold of grace when you’re clinging tightly to a mask of self-protection. That gives the Accuser a field day.

And it causes us to walk in more shame.

And timidity.

Let it go. Eyes on the road ahead. There’s a beautiful destination waiting for you, and an journey you need to see + enjoy while you’re OTW.
