Hello everybody,

My name is Jürgen Brand, born and raised in Magdeburg, resident in Brühl near Cologne since 1984.
As part of my effort to come to terms with what I went through in prison, I wrote a 2-part book about my experiences. The books are published as paperbacks. I tell the story of my futile attempts – during the 1970s – to leave the GDR (East Germany) to live in the FRG (West Germany), and of my 4 years of imprisonment in Thale prison camp in the Harz Mountains as well as Torgau prison in Saxony.
During that time I spent a total of 14 months in strictest solitary detention. I wasn’t allowed to read or write and letters from home were withheld. Lunch was provided once every three days only. During interrogation by the Stasi (State Security Service) I was referred to as louse, criminal, antisocial parasite, traitor, rat, scum, etc. My sleeping place was a bare board without mattress.
They did their best to break me by subjecting me to starvation and Stasi interrogations, with the threat of death ever present. But why? All I wanted was to move to the western part of Germany.
There was no mercy for political prisoners – especially as I refused to do forced labour.
When I complained about this treatment I was just laughed at. I kept hoping that West Germany would ransom me.
Even today, the papers care little about disclosing what happened or how one might come to terms with it. Nowadays, schools provide little information about the GDR dictatorship and it might be useful to read a book about it. Part 2 will be translated into English in 2017, for subsequent publication.

We, the contemporary witnesses and victims of Stasi terror, are slowly dying out.

Project Accelerate aims to expand the power and influence of women in the United States by 2030 by addressing inequality in the workplace, particularly the absence of women of color in positions of influence and leadership.

The program will accelerate young women’s trajectories through college and career entry, leveraging partnerships with corporations and social impact organizations to ensure both their preparation and their access to positions of influence. Project Accelerate will also reduce the gender gap by working with young women starting as early as their junior year in high school to ensure they have the resources and support to thrive as leaders.

Project Accelerate will prepare thousands of young women leaders not merely to succeed in workplace environments, but also to affect cultural change from within.

For more information on this project and its future, stop by the Girls Inc Website or call Girls Inc. of Central Alabama at 205-599-5555.
