Who will you honor in commemoration of National Doctors' Day? At Texas Health Fort Worth, we know our doctors are at the heart of all that we do. We are grateful for their unwavering commitment, stalwart resilience, skilled innovation and compassionate care. Each year we pause to recognize physicians everywhere, and express gratitude to those working here on our medical campus.

The idea for Doctors' Day began in 1933 when a Georgia physician spouse, Eudora Brown Almond, mailed greeting cards and letters of appreciation to all the local physicians and their wives. She placed flowers at the graves of deceased doctors and prepared formal meals for their families. That same year, the Women's Alliance of the Southern Medical Association envisioned a national day. Nearly sixty years later, in 1990, President George Bush officially passed public law designating March 30 as National Doctors' Day. Hospitals and clinics across the US now traditionally celebrate the date by preparing a special meal for physicians, while appreciative patients and folks everywhere are encouraged to write messages of thanks.

As we proudly celebrate National Doctors' Day, we invite you to join us in expressing words of gratitude to the doctors in your life. Shown here are just a few of our favorite faces among the 1,500 physicians serving our campus, together with staff members - and the chef who oversaw preparation of their celebratory lunchtime meal. Thank you, Doctors, for all that you do!
We're excited and honored to have collaborated with Southern Medical Association on a new episode of their podcast, The Business of Medicine! The episode is called "EHR Implementation: What Physicians Need to Know" and features our own Mark Griffin and Sherry Pouncey.

I need someone connected with SMA to help me with an historical citation. I am an historian of medicine, and I am now checking endnotes for my article, "Black Women, Indigent medical care and Academic Medical Politics 1950-1965: The Case of Birmingham, Alabama," Forthcoming in the Journal of Southern History, summer 2021 (peer reviewed publication.)
I noted that the "Southern Medical Association, founded in the city [Birmingham] in 1906, was conceived as “an organization [to]…promote the progress of scientific medicine generally, and in particular, attack problems peculiar to the South.” Its professional status was furthered by its sponsorship of a widely circulated regional medical journal, the Southern Medical Journal, (SMJ) with editorial offices based in Birmingham Two questions: 1. was the SMA founded in Birmingham? 2. Can someone help provide me with a reference for the quotation? I have an old website reference that no longer works. Thanks. Charlotte Borst, Ph.D. ([email protected])

Food Insecurity Among Older Adults

Food insecurity is a problem for people across the lifespan, and it has been exacerbated by COVID-19. Adults facing food insecurity often reduce the variety of their diet and tend to consume a few low-cost, energy-dense, and nutritionally poor foods to maintain caloric intake, and this puts them at an increased risk for a variety of adverse health outcomes, including diabetes, pulmonary diseases, cardiovascular diseases, and obesity.

CME Course: Safety of Recombinant Zoster Vaccine in Rheumatology Patients

Herpes zoster (HZ) affects 1 in every 3 human beings during his or her lifetime; the incidence seems to be higher in the older adult population.

Patients with rheumatic diseases are found to be at higher risk of HZ. The authors of this study found only two peer-reviewed publications that outline the safety of recombinant zoster vaccine (RZV) in adult subjects with underlying rheumatic diseases.

CME Course: Safety of Recombinant Zoster Vaccine in Rheumatology Patients The goal of this study was to identify the safety of the recombinant zoster vaccine (RZV) in the authors’ university-affiliated rheumatology practice.
