Q. Do allergies affect oral health?

Yes! We are in the thick of allergy season, which can wreak havoc on oral health. Stuffy noses can cause mouth breathing, leading to dry mouth. A post-nasal drip caused by drainage may lead to bad breath. Sinus pain caused by overstuffed nasal passages may lead to tooth pain. The good news is that there are ways to manage allergies and their effects on oral health, so these issues can be better managed or avoided altogether. We typically suggest patients try these four ways of relieving discomfort.

Chewing toys – plastic or rubber toys that at teething age, kids will inevitably put in their mouth, are good options for soothing achy gums.

Cold things – a frozen washcloth with a knot at the end on which a child can gnaw, may numb painful areas. We do not advise freezing teething rings or toys. Read more on our blog @ https://bit.ly/3D0HYFS.

Tooth decay in infants or toddlers is often referred to as baby bottle tooth decay. It often occurs when the baby is put to bed with a bottle, or when a bottle is used in place of a pacifier for a fussy baby.

Prevent tooth decay in small children by placing only formula, milk or breast milk in bottles – no juice or sugary drinks. Don’t put your baby to bed with a bottle and begin gentle brushing with a small amount of toothpaste as soon as teeth begin to come in.
