🤷‍♀️🤔 What’s Wrong Wednesday- Follow Up 🤔🤷‍♂️

❓Did you answer correctly⁉️ 🙋

🧐 Diagnosis ✍️…This patient sustained a glenohumeral joint (shoulder) dislocation where the ball pops out of the socket ☄️

✅ As the ball 🔘 is forced over the edge of the socket, the labrum and associated ligaments are torn 🔥 or damaged (called a Bankart tear), which can result in recurrent instability (shoulder continues
to slip out of place)

✅ Occasionally, the dislocation breaks of a piece of the front of the edge of the socket, known as a bony 🦴 Bankart

✅ In addition this patient also tore his rotator cuff, the tendon that attaches at the top of the ball to help lift the arm overhead 🏋️‍♀️

✅ Individually, each type of injury frequently requires, but the combination of both injuries necessitates surgery to allow for proper healing 🙏🏻 and restoration of function 🙌

✅ 65 year old male tripped and fell. Caught his left arm 💪 on a table as he fell
✅ His arm was abducted and externally rotated during the fall
✅ He felt a pop 💥, severe pain🔥, and could not 🚫 move his shoulder

🧘‍♀️✨ #MeditationMonday

🌟Meditation was a foreign concept to me until about 5 years ago

I tried it after realizing many highly successful people in highly demanding careers found it incredibly useful to:
▪️ Gain a new perspective
▪️ Increase self awareness
▪️ Focus on the present
▪️ Harness the irrational internal voice
▪️ Employ rational thought over emotion

I started meditation with Headspace, a simple, effective app that teaches the basics of breath work 😮‍💨 and mindfulness 🧖.

I have also used the Waking Up app by Sam Harris which is a deeper dive into the mind and consciousness. Both are excellent methods to learn to calm the mind.

💫 If you’re still skeptical, check out the book and app 10% Happier (Ten Percent Happier) by Dan Harris (no relation), which is a great example of how meditation does not “make you soft” or remove your edge, but instead allows for a more lucid mind 🙏🏻 to attack the day❕

Recently, the pervasiveness of mental health has become apparent on a global 🌎 level. Athletic giants like Michael Phelps, Simone Biles, Naomi Osaka, and many others have bravely crossed the boundary of vulnerability to demonstrate the reality and importance of mental health.

As a physician, whose profession is rife with stress as evidenced by high burnout rates 📈 and su***de rates twice that of the standard population, it has never been more apparent how important mental health is.

🧐 Diagnosis ✍️…This patient sustained a distal humerus fracture 💪 🔥

✅ Arm wrestling places a large torque on the humerus as forced internal rotation is resisted 🤝 and opposed
✅ In this case the torque was greater than the bone 🦴 could resist, causing a spiral fracture 💥 of the distal humerus
✅ With displacement and angulation in an young active individual, surgical fixation was indicated
✅ This fracture was fixed with two plates ⚪️⚪️ and several screws 🔩🔩
✅ After healing, the patient returned back to full function and activity 💯🙌🙌

🧐 The details…✍️

✅ 14-year-old male linebacker was rolled up on while making a tackle
✅ He was hit on the outside of his left knee 🦵 with a valgus force and felt immediate pain 💥
✅. He was able to walk 🚶‍♂️but unable 🚫 to return to play due to pain 🔥 over the lateral (outside) aspect of the knee
✅ Range of motion was limited in extension, and he noted ✍️ catching when trying to bend
