Mountain Brook’s Reagan Riley wins for 3rd time this season!! Andrews Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Center
MONTGOMERY – On a day when finishers No. 2 through No. 6 clocked a personal-best, Mountain Brook High School cross country runner Reagan Riley was faster than all of them.

Riley, a senior who has committed to Notre Dame, won the Black and Gold Classic at John R. Esslinger Trail of Champions on Scottsboro with a time of 17:23.33. She finished more than 45 seconds ahead of runner-up Ava McIntosh of Huntsville, who ran a personal-best 18:15.34.
Riley’s performance puts her in this week’s AHSAA Cross Country Spotlight for the second straight week, this time alongside Auburn’s Maxwell Hardin, who nearly won an out-of-state meet with 24 teams and more than 175 runners. Riley has run three times this season – two 5Ks and a 2-miler – and won all three. Hardin ran a season-best 15:07.10 at the Wingfoot XC Classic in Cartersville, Ga., finishing second as Joe Sapone of Holy Innocents’ Episcopal (Ga.) edged him at the finish line to win in 15:06.20. Vestavia Hills’ Alex Leath (15:47.70) and Henry Strand (15:48.10) finished 17th and 18th, respectively, and Hewitt-Trussville’s Tristan Teer was 25th in 16:01.90. Hardin won the AT&T Starr’s Mill Panther XC Meet in Fayetteville, Ga., earlier this season.
At Scottsboro, several runners recorded personal bests while chasing Riley. Homewood’s Emma Brooke Levering was third with a PR of 18:24.57, and Oxford’s Katie Keur had a PR of 18:28.25 for fourth. Mountain Brook’s Virginia Averyt (18:33.09) and Callie Kent (18:51.68) finished fifth and sixth, as Averyt had a PR, and teammates Kennedy Hamilton (18:58.49) and Gracie Walker (19:06.77) also had PRs.
Mountain Brook, with five of the top seven finishers, won the Black and Gold Classic team title, with Homewood in second, Hoover in third and Scottsboro in fourth.

This week’s highlights James Sherman. James is a retired Marine who served our country from 2005-2009. During his third year in the Marines, James was in charge of a renovation project which involved moving heavy equipment. While lifting a piece of equipment, he severely injured my back.

“Going to see Dr. Cordover was the best decision. He was extremely professional yet down to earth and easy to talk to. He explained that my L5 to S1 disc vertebrae protruded and shifted. No wonder I was in so much pain! Dr. Cordover discussed the risks and assured me and my wife that we had nothing to worry about and that surgical intervention was my best option.”

Q: What causes Degenerative Disc Disease?

Degenerative disc disease begins when small tears appear in the disc wall, called the annulus. These tears can cause pain. When the tears heal, they create scare tissue that is not as strong as the original disc wall. If the back is repeatedly injured, the process of tearing and scarring may continue, weakening the disc wall. Over time, the nucleus (or center) of the disc becomes damaged and loses some of it's water content.

Q: What are the signs & symptoms?

Periods of severe pain that come and go. These last from a few days to a few months before getting better. They can range from nagging pain to disabling pain. Pain can affect the low back, buttocks and thighs or the neck, depending on where the affected disc is, radiating to the arms and hands. Numbness and tingling in the extremities. Weakness in the leg muscles or foot drop, a possible sign of damage to the nerve root.

He learned to cope with the recurring injury, and he always wanted to keep playing - so he would rehab for a while then get back on the field with some tape and a brace.

As a senior, Tucker suffered a devastating high ankle sprain during a game that ended his high school football career. Tucker’s comeback journey started with surgery performed by Dr. Charles Pitts. Through hard work and determination, Tucker persevered, and was back on the soccer field this past spring excelling alongside his Tigers teammates.

Q: What is frozen shoulder?

Frozen shoulder is the stiffening of your shoulder. It happens over time, and you may not know what caused it. With a frozen shoulder, it can be hard for you to be as active as you like.

Q: What are the signs & symptoms of frozen shoulder?

Frozen shoulder is most often a problem for older people. It starts slowly with a mild pain. Over a few months, the pain gets worse. It can be hard for you to sleep. You begin to have trouble lifting your arm, or moving it backwards. With time, pain can lessen, but your shoulder may become so stiff that you can barely move it.

Q: What are the treatment options?

A frozen shoulder will usually get better on its own, even without any treatment. However, this can take up to three years. You may benefit from treatment options such as medications, injections and physical therapy. A frozen shoulder has several stages from pain with motion, loss of motion and pain at night, and then significant stiffness with minimal night pain. Anti-inflammatory drugs (like aspirin or ibuprofen) and corticosteroid injections can help treat the inflammation and pain associated with the beginning phases of a frozen shoulder.

Q: What is a meniscus tear?

A torn meniscus is one of the most common knee injuries. Any activity that causes you to forcefully twist or rotate your knee, especially when putting your full weight on it, can lead to a torn meniscus.

Q: What are the causes of a meniscus tear?

A meniscus injury can be caused by a partial or full tear of the cartilage that results from trauma or twisting of the knee. Tears can occur in several directions and can be described as longitudinal, radial, parrot-beak, horizontal, and bucket-handle. Tears in the meniscus cause pain, occasional swelling, mechanical symptoms (sensation of catching, clicking, or locking in the knee), and occasionally limitations in motion.

Q: What are the signs & symptoms of a meniscus tear?

Diagnosis of a meniscus tear requires a thorough examination and detailed assessment of radiographs (X-rays) and MRI scans. Treatment is dependent on the patient, his or her activity level, and importantly the presence or absence of arthritis.
