10•10•22 ~ World Mental Health Day ~ The relationship between mental health and oral health works both ways. If your oral health can affect your mental health, then mental health affects oral health, too. In other words, these two areas are connected and they influence each other.
We want you and our patients to be aware of this very important connection because your mental health and oral health matter. As a helping tool try these fun tricks to make your oral health care more enjoyable!
1. Get a toothbrush in your favorite color or try out an electronic one if you haven’t before (doesn’t have to be expensive Amazon and Walmart have great options)
2. Brush your teeth to your favorite song! Not only does this make brushing fun, it also makes the time go by quicker and ensures your getting the required amount of brush time in 😁
3. Try out a new toothpaste or mouthwash; maybe a new flavor or finally get the one that you’ve been thinking about switching over to for a while now. If you aren’t sure ask your Dentist or Hygienist if they have a recommendation for you.
4. Add in new fun steps like brushing your tongue or using a water-flosser before/after brushing.
5. Try new foods and drinks! This might sound crazy but it’s true. Your diet plays a huge part in your mental and oral health so it’s very important to be aware of what you’re consuming. Things like strawberries, spinach and leafy greens, cheese, sliced apples and pears, celery and water are all beneficial to your oral and mental health. *Tip: if you chew a lot of gum look for one that is sugar free or uses Xylitol instead (trident gum)
And always remember “We Love To See You Smile” 🦷✨

DID YOU KNOW… An ancient Roman scientist found that putting finger pressure on teeth for a long length of time over months would help shift teeth into a new position. Fast forward to the early 1900s, Dentists would wrap materials such as ivory, wood, copper, gold or even silver and connect them with bands that helped press the teeth into the proper place. It wasn’t until the 1970s that stainless steel gained its popularity due to its less expensive price tag and more flexible material. Finally, in the late 1990s Orthodontics was introduced to invisible braces and clear retainers. Following this, the American Association of Orthodontists proclaimed October as National Orthodontic Health Month. It’s amazing how far we’ve come in the world of Orthodontics and we are thrilled to have an entire month dedicated to the health and care of our patients. 🦷✨
