Joint stiffness could mean arthritis, and tingling or numbness could be a sign of diabetes. Swelling might indicate kidney disease, heart disease or high blood pressure. Are your feet trying to tell you something? If so, don't ignore the signs, and find a doctor who listens at ascension.org.

Today is the third Sunday in Lent. During Lent we are invited to reflect, becoming more aware of our feelings and our actions.
How are you taking time to reflect during this Lenten season?
Today, on the Solemnity of St. Joseph, we pray for the Sisters of St. Joseph around the world, especially those active in our healthcare ministry. We look to their example of love of the “dear neighbor” to inspire our continued faithfulness to our Mission and Values. #WeAreAscension

At Ascension St. Vincent's, we believe in taking care of the whole person -- mind, body, and spirit. When Mrs. Mims was admitted to the hospital in February, her loving husband would visit her every day. During one visit, he mentioned to the nurse that he was also not feeling well. He was examined in the emergency room and ultimately admitted for care. While both were being cared for, several days had passed where the couple was unable to see each other.
"The physical therapist, Madison Hammons, came to my office and asked if we could reunite him and his wife. He said he wanted to see his bride," said Susan Sanderson, RN, Patient Care Supervisor. "We were able to use a travel monitor and bring him to his wife after getting permission, of course, from their physicians. Collaborative care is so important. The entire care team, from physical therapy to case managers and nurses were able to reunite this adorable couple who deeply missed each other."
Thank you to our wonderful care givers for taking patient care beyond medicine to provide truly compassionate care.
We're happy to welcome James Colvard, DO, and Haley Jost, CRNP to Ascension St. Vincent's Primary Care Vestavia in its new location in the Vestavia City Center. March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. Colon cancer is the fourth most common cancer in second leading cause of cancer specific death. Fortunately, screenings are available and early detection is the key to successful treatment. The American Cancer Society has recently lowered the recommended age from 50 to 45 for a baseline colonoscopy for people with no family history or symptoms. Start a conversation with a doctor who listens. Visit ascension.org today.
Congratulations to Kyle Seckinger, RN, who works in SICU at Ascension St. Vincent’s East, for earning the DAISY Award for extraordinary nurses. Kyle was nominated by several patients' families, who said:
“My father was extremely ill and near the end of life. Kyle was patient, kind and competent while caring for him. It was as if a member of our own family were administering the care. He is the gold standard.”
"My dad recently had an extended stay at your hospital. At the end he was moved to the SICU and Kyle was his nurse for the last four days of his life. He brought a feeling of peace when he entered the room and gave excellent nursing care, but it was so much more than that. He was kind, respectful and comforting. I am so thankful to everyone that helped care for him...but I will never forget Kyle."
"Kyle has been extremely attentive. He was in and out checking on my father around 6 times in just over an hour. He was so patient to explain everything to us and respond to anything we asked for."
We salute our caregivers and associates for their dedication to our patients, communities and each other. You live our Mission every day. Thank you for all you do.
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent and calls for quiet reflection. We are moved to still ourselves and listen to what the voice of God is saying in our lives and in our hearts.
How can you make space in your days this Lent to hear the still, small voice of God in your heart?
