The Yoga Circle is a classic studio located in Southside right under the iconic statue of Vulcan. We offer mostly beginning yoga, and a variety of hatha (physical) yoga classes.

Home practice (2/2)
My home practice usually lasts around an hour • That’s meditation, breathwork, and asana; usually but not always in that order. I know I won't always have this time luxury, but in my current life chapter it serves me pretty well.

I wanted the time lapse to go a little slower but who knew that if you keep it going for more than 40 minutes it doubles the speed 😄 Two videos, some choppy segments, 40 min and 16 min (see previous post). My inspiration stems from Katonah, vinyasa, kundalini, and bits and pieces from my favorite teachers around the globe. A potent fusion of breathwork, long holds, a 2 minute plank and new challenges.

Right now, it's working on my backbend + flowing wheels, Katonah Water Salutations, and handstand.

I don't set an "hour" goal. It just comes out. Not because I have to, but because I want to…if I have the time.

I don't have "abs," but my core is strong (yes, there is a difference between having a "six pack" and a strong core).

I don't strive for perfection. Instead I access intention. A visceral need for self-expression.

I wake up to move energy around. Clear out stagnancy. Stale thoughts. A lingering thought loop. "Don't be the dustpan," someone said to me recently…don't collect other people's s**t. Blow it out. Let it go.

"A conscious use of energy is the hallmark of a yogic lifestyle."

We don't live to do spiritual practice. We do our spiritual practice so that we can live.

The phrase I heard a lot from my yoga teachers when I first started doing yoga, was the phrase " just let it go". I never understood what that meant. I thought that after I started teaching I would suddenly realize this deep profound meaning to this phrase that I was missing, but the opposite happened.

My question was always (and still is) what is "it", and how do I just detach and stop caring about it? A phrase I like to use instead is "Acceptance and Surrender". Acceptance for what is happening even when you hate what is happening, surrendering to the situation and resting in it. Surrendering to a higher power, to God, to whatever. Our culture is often scores low with emotional intelligence and fears feelings, But there can be peace and growth within difficult situations when we allow our hearts to open to them.

When we choose to stop bypassing the mud in our lives, and instead choose to go straight into it and rest in it, we will come out stronger, more resilient, and more compassionate.

I shared this a while ago but I wanted to share it again. All of these “paintings” are actually iPhone photos I’ve painted over. I love this process so much, even the cover of my new book “How Far You Have Come” is an iPhone photo that I’ve painted over.

For me, painting over photos has become so much more than merely a creative practice. It’s also taught me the value of looking back on past moments of my life in a new way.

So many of us have photos sitting in our phones that maybe we’ve forgotten about or overlooked because maybe they didn’t seem worthy enough to share.

In life, looking back isn’t always easy. But sometimes “looking back” is simply looking back on that photo of the sunset on that ordinary day.

Sometimes “looking back” leads us to finding beauty in the mundane. Reclaiming moments as meaningful, when at the time, it felt like just another day.

Here’s to looking back and finding something beautiful. Here’s to seeing something in a way we’ve never seen it before.

let’s talk about inversions

being upside down is where i feel at home—time stops. it’s just me and my breath. it is liberating. exciting. sometimes i stand in awe of my body, what it is capable of when i let go of the stories i’ve told myself up until this point.

when you imagine being upside down what do you feel in your physical body?

does it scare you? empower you? does it feel playful? serious?

can you let go of your attachment to the posture and allow the journey to making your way upside down be the goal? are you open exploring the posture rather than mastering it?

know that whatever inversion you want to work on/whatever posture resonates with you in your life right now—it’s a way to look inward. always showing us how to gain clarity and insight on what we need more of, what we can let go of, where we can humble ourselves and find more playfulness and joy.

so it’s about the headstand and the forearm stand and the handstand, of course. they’re magical shapes. but it’s really about how those shapes make you feel. what they open up inside you. every posture is a portal.
