Blazer Male Excellence Network (BMEN)

UAB's African American Male Retention Program Nationally, only about 1/3 of African American male students go on to graduate from college once enrolled.

UAB has decided to face this problem head on and developed a program to assist African American Male students in their pursuit of graduating. BMEN helps to provide the tools necessary for our students to be successful academically and socially at UAB.

If you see someone you know CONGRATULATE THEM! Tag them in the comments!

Our biggest mentor count yet and we are super excited to see what this school year has in store for this great group of men! The work never stops and it’s starting now!

While we are at different institutions, we share the same goal of increasing retention and graduation rates for men of color.

In October, BMEN hosted “Call Me Doctor”. This programming was an opportunity for undergraduate students to connect with Professional students, professors and working professionals in the disciplines of medicine, dental, physical therapy, physician assistant and optometry.
The afternoon started with networking and transitioned to a panel discussion and ended with question and answer session.
Our goal is to make sure that students are prepared for their lives following UAB. Programs like this are the best catalyst to success.

Learning never stops.

BMEN spent Saturday engaging with the Black community to develop strategies to support Black males.
From an informative opening keynote from District Attorney Danny Carr to hearing about the work Birmingham City is doing to support Black youth to panel discussions. The day was a full opportunity to be educated and empowered to be involved.
Thank you to the visionaries of this inaugural summit for caring enough to host this and for allowing BMEN to participate.

We are grateful for the opportunity to serve and learn today.
Thank you to the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute for allowing BMEN to participate in the MLK Day of Service. It was more than showing up and signing in. We learned and connected with the community.
John said, “I learned about Black art, economic history, and churches' significant roles in our communities. We also discussed exciting topics like the use of green books, the Masonic Temple, and Black labor unions. “
He’s looking forward to serving at BCRI again.
We honor the sacrifices that Dr. King and his family made all so that we would enjoy a more equitable quality of life. Our responsibility is to pay this effort forward.
We will continue to us to serve. The work is not done.
