Is feeding your kid fun? 🙃
It can be!! Read more details below on the 3 quick tips we listed in our last post/reel.

Comment below if you are interested in more tips of mindful feeding and how to help picky eaters during weaning, toddler years and beyond!!

🌟 Food Chaining
Slightly altering a preferred food so that the change is minor but encourages your child to taste something new (grilled cheese with cheddar —> add mozzarella; grilled cheese with mozzarella —> cheese quesadilla —> quesadilla with small amount of shredded chicken OR green veggie OR dip in salsa or guac)

🌟 Reframe the Dialogue
Encourage your child to speak about foods in more positive terms.
From “yuck / disgusting” to “this is not my favorite”
From “I hate vegetables” to “I’m not sure what that is going to taste like”
From “I only eat kid foods” to “I can taste new things”

🌟 Try new and non-preferred foods at lunch or snack.
Breakfast is often rushed and dinner time generally creates more anxiety (more formal, closer to bedtime, may be fatigued from long day)

*Don’t forget to prioritize sitting and eating with your child as often as possible

Love these graphic explanations from @sensorystoriesbynicole

Have you heard the term “dysgraphia” before? Dysgraphia and poor handwriting can affect a child’s performance in many school related activities and subjects and also negatively affect self-esteem and attitude toward school and learning.

OTs work with children to improve hand strength, grasp patterns, fine motor coordination, visual motor and visual perceptual skills to improve handwriting and letter formation! ✍️ 🖍 📖

This is an easy activity to use at home! If you don’t have a scooter board, your child can do animal walks, jumps, wheelbarrow walks, etc. down the hall or across the room to pick up and bring back puzzle pieces, legos, stacking toys, etc!

Benefits:
⭐️ the movement and proprioceptive input help regulate the sensory system for improved attention and body awareness

⭐️ specify which letter or colored block you want your child to bring back to promote visual scanning and recall skills

⭐️ address fine motor and visual motor skills by completing the puzzle, tracing or writing the letters, or stacking the blocks/legos

⭐️ task completion, attention, sequencing steps

Did you know we offer therapeutic listening programs though @integratedlistening ?!
We have multiple programs to target a child’s specific needs ranging from sensory processing, attention, and motor skills to self-regulation to social skills. The programs are designed to continue to work toward a child’s specific OT goals and are built around the concept of #neuroplasticity - which just means that the brain can change and form new pathways and connections over time 🧠 🌟 👂 #occupationaltherapy #pediatricoccupationaltherapy #pedsOT #therapeuticlistening #sensoryprocessing

Meet Mrs. Shea (me!) 👋

I (Shea) am the founder and owner of BOOST Kids. I am a nationally registered and state licensed pediatric occupational therapist with 8+ years of experience working in outpatient pediatrics. I opened BOOST Kids in 2017 after the birth of my first son. My husband, Brian, and I are currently expecting our third child!

Meeting and working directly with the Birmingham area children and families and growing BOOST Kids over the past few years, has been more rewarding and exciting than I could have imagined. I am excited about our growing team, clinic, brand, and vision and the opportunity we have ahead to continue to serve the Birmingham community via direct therapy services, parent education, community education, and more!

I grew up in Louisiana, received my undergraduate degree in Kinesiology from LSU and then masters of occupational therapy from LSU health Sciences Center in New Orleans. My husband, Brian, and I met while living in New Orleans and life eventually brought us to Birmingham!

I am passionate about childhood development and the role that occupational therapy can play in improving the quality of life of both the child and their family unit.

She earned her Occupational Therapy Doctorate from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, after which she worked in an outpatient pediatric setting in the DC Metro area before moving to Birmingham in the fall of 2020.

Chelsey believes in the importance of providing a positive and supportive environment for children to learn and grow, which is why she is so excited to be joining BOOST Kids! She has a certification in Therapeutic Listening.

When not at work, Chelsey enjoys running, yoga, experimenting in the kitchen, reading, volunteering, traveling, and above all, spending time with her family and friends.
