DEI Office reflects on first year - School of Nursing - News

The UAB School of Nursing continues its mission to shape patient-centered, equitable health care by preparing diverse nurse leaders and has made several strides since the establishment of its Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in 2021.

Professor and Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Felesia Bowen, PhD, DNP, APRN, PPCNP-BC, FAAN, continues to guide a path forward, following the School’s Diversity Strategic Plan, collaborating with the UAB Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and bringing together the UABSON community through advisory groups and regular events.

“When I sat back and looked at the work we’ve done over the last year, it is phenomenal,” Bowen said. “We have a working, functioning strategic plan that aligns with the School’s mission and values as well as the overall university.”

Thanks to everyone who helped support the UAB Toy Drive! The UABSON was able to collect 30 bicycles and a box full of toys to donate to Toys for Tots!

The Birmingham Chapter, American Association for Men in Nursing partnered with UAB Medicine's Men in Nursing Employee Resource Group for a two week food and toiletry item drive to donate to UAB's Blazer Kitchen.

The drive ended with a "CANstruction" Competition where teams made works of art out of the canned foods!

This year, they were able to collect more than 8,000 pounds of food—equivalent to 6,750 meals—as well as toiletry items and a monetary donation.

Congratulations to our alumnus, Dr. James R***r (PhD 1994), on his retirement!

Tenured Professor and 1917 Clinic Director James R***r, Ph.D., CRNP, J.D., retired Dec. 1, 2022 after four decades of service in HIV care in the southeast.

R***r has been a pioneer of change and compassionate care in Alabama and beyond, ensuring that the 1917 Clinic is equipped with wide-ranging services for those living with HIV.

"I am extremely proud of the highly dedicated multidisciplinary team of medical, dental, mental health and allied health professionals providing care, service, and conducting research at the 1917 Clinic,” says R***r.

At least 1,270 graduating students will walk in commencement exercises this fall at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, on Dec. 9-10, in Bartow Arena. More than 2,242 students are eligible to graduate from UAB this fall.

The university will host two ceremonies: the first for all graduate students, including master’s, educational specialist and doctoral, at 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 9, and the second for undergraduates at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 10.

For fall 2022, the UAB Graduate School will confer the university’s highest degrees on 151 students from 23 states and six countries, representing 28 disciplines. All graduate students — master’s, educational specialist and doctoral — will participate in Friday’s combined commencement and doctoral hooding ceremony. https://go.uab.edu/3Vn8DoY

UABSON Assistant Professor and Nurse Anesthesia Assistant Pathway Director Amy Yerdon has been elected as a Director on the board of the Alabama Association of Nurse Anesthetists

“During the 11 years I’ve enjoyed as a CRNA, I have developed a career goal to impact the anesthesia profession through education to improve patient outcomes and experience,” Yerdon said. “I believe there are numerous ways to accomplish this goal, including serving on the ALANA Board of Directors.”

Nicholas Cayce went from Broadway to nursing school! After years of performing across the country, Cayce had a change of heart after the COVID-19 pandemic hit. On Dec. 9, he will walk across a new stage as a graduate of UABSON's Accelerated Master’s in Nursing Pathway.

Nursing Partnership publishes COVID innovations - School of Nursing - News

Earlier this year, several leaders from the UABSON and UAB Medicine co-authored an article highlighting how the UAB Nursing Partnership, an academic-practice partnership pivoted to address needs and ensure care during the pandemic.

UABSON Associate Professor Melanie Gibbons Hallman is President-Elect of the American Academy of Emergency Nurse Practitioners. Hallman has been in the role since November 2021 and will assume the role of President in November 2023.

On this Veterans Day, Associate Professor and Director of the Nurse-Midwifery Pathway Sharon Holley shares a personal story of the behind-the-scenes family life of a military Veteran.

"The honors and remembrance should focus on the Veterans. But we would also do well to remember the military families and their sacrifice as well when we remember what military members are doing to protect our country," Holley said. "Military families are a quiet group of people when it comes to wanting acknowledgement. All of us should remember to thank the families and the Veterans, but more importantly we should find ways to support them."

UABSON Assistant Professor Jeremy Jordan has developed and is co-hosting a podcast series with the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners. The 10-episode series, called Team Peds Talks: The Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioners’ Impact, launched in September 2022.

Fogger co-edits addictions nursing resource - School of Nursing - News

UABSON Professor Susanne Fogger has co-edited an important resource for addictions and psychiatric mental health nursing.

The third edition of American Nurse’s Association’s “Addictions Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice,” is a foundational volume that articulates the essentials of addictions nursing and provides a resource for nurses. It covers what addictions nursing is as well as provides a framework for actions and behaviors of registered addictions nurses. While it is not intended to replace a textbook, Fogger said this resource can provide guidance for registered nurses working with patients and families with addictions.

“Addictions nursing is not limited to those with psychiatric illness or substance use disorders, so any nurse can benefit from this resource,” Fogger said. “Nurses can reference this for guidance on individuals with substance use or misuse, addictive illness and co-occurring psychiatric issues.”
