"I think the right to read, is one of our inherent rights, and I think that people in America today are intelligent enough to decide for themselves what they want to read. Without being told, by self-appointed people, you must not read this, or you cannot read this." ~ Bennett Cerf

Superheroes at the Smithfield Branch, a JCLC member library and part of the Birmingham Public Library system.

The Smithfield Branch Library opened in 1918 as the Booker T. Washington Library. It was one of the state's first libraries for black Alabamians. The branch library was located in three leased rooms of the Masonic Temple Building at 4th Avenue North and 17th Street. It was not until 1956 that the first Smithfield Library Branch building was dedicated. It holds an important place in the city's history, being the first building specifically built as a library for black residents of Birmingham.

Open Monday - Friday 9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.

"Why buy a book when you can join a library?" -- Ricky Gervais

"Sandwich : a novel" by Catherine Newman

Rocky has looked forward to her family’s yearly escape to Cape Cod. Their humble beach-town rental has been the site of sweet memories, sunny days, great meals, and messes of all kinds: emotional, marital, and — thanks to the cottage’s ancient plumbing — septic too. This year’s vacation, with Rocky sandwiched between her half-grown kids and fully aging parents, promises to be just as delightful as summers past — except, perhaps, for Rocky’s hormonal bouts of rage and melancholy. (Hello, menopause!) Her body is changing — her life is, too. And then a chain of events sends Rocky into the past, reliving both the tenderness and sorrow of a handful of long-ago summers. It's one precious week: everything is in balance and flux. When Rocky comes face to face with her family’s history and future, she is forced to accept that she can no longer hide her secrets from the people she loves.
