Beautiful letter from Carl Jung

In recent seasons of being, I have had occasion to reflect on the utterly improbable trajectory of my life, plotted not by planning but by living.

We long to be given the next step and the route to the horizon, allaying our anxiety with the illusion of a destination somewhere beyond the vista of our present life.

But the hardest reality to bear is that death is the only horizon, with numberless ways to get there — none replicable, all uncertain in their route, all only certain to arrive. This is why there are infinitely many kinds of beautiful lives. And this is why each and every one of them, even the most seemingly actualized, trembles with a staggering degree of doubt and confusion. Uncertainty is the price of beauty, and integrity the only compass for the territory of uncertainty that constitutes the landmass of any given life.

And so the best we can do is walk step by next intuitively right step until one day, pausing to catch our breath, we turn around and gasp at a path. If we have been lucky enough, if we have been willing enough to face the uncertainty, it is our own singular path, unplotted by our anxious younger selves, untrodden by anyone else.

The recovery community has a shorthand for keeping this at the center of awareness in times of inner tumult: “Do the next right thing.” The concept, in fact, originated two years before the founding of Alcoholics Anonymous, in a lucid and largehearted letter Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung (July 26, 1875–June 6, 1961) wrote to an anonymous correspondent, included in Selected Letters of C.G. Jung, 1909–1961 (public library).

I am in long time recovery and struggled with enumerable set backs at the beginning of this journey. The 12-Steps program has it value and is a viable tool in the recovery process. (A Tool) It was part of my process on the front end, but I hit a ceiling. I got sponsors, studied the big book, went to meetings, did service work, worked with others a few years.
I worked the steps honestly as I was directed by my sponsors. I would have periods of reprieve but returned to my mind altering substances of choice. I begin to wonder why was I losing this battle. After many teachers, and mentors, and counselors (spiritual and secular) outside of the 12-Step Construct I found freedom.
I believe this book explaining The Star Matrix Assessment and the Multi Model Recovery Process developed by Steve and Pam Moore could have reduced the time I was suffering as I was doing my own research. (Smile) This program could have lifted the guilt I was feeling because the traditional 12-Step program wasn’t working alone for me. Hopefully this skillful work presented by the Moore’s can be a gateway to your freedom.

Addiction Recovery Intensive

Why us? We have a unique perspective to treatment. Through decades of staff’s personal and professional experience, we began to notice that treatment was based on a cookie cutter approach: You go to inpatient or outpatient treatment and then to AA (Alcoholics Anonymous). While this method works well for many people, the relapse rate has remained around 66% at best with this approach. This means the standard method is not working for at least 66% of the people who seek treatment. For many just going to treatment for 30 days and then to a 12 Step program is not enough. Many need some sort of formalized support by addiction specialists after treatment. For others, treatment then AA is more than they need. Some may need something completely different such as Smart Recovery, Celebrate Recovery or Refuge Recovery. At The Moore Institute, and through research by The Addiction Research Foundation, we offer a solution that is:

•Individual•Flexible•Alternative•Combined with the best of Traditional•

How are we different? Our treatment process is developed to meet individual needs. This ensures not only individualized treatment but privacy and confidentiality. At the Moore Institute, we view and address addiction through the belief that addiction is a disease. Therefore it is on a continuum, with each person at a different spot on that continuum. We utilize our assessment system to assess the appropriate amount of treatment. For some that would mean a referral to traditional treatment, for others we would combine the services at the Moore Institute with outside resources and for some the services we provide will be enough. We utilize the Multi Modal Recovery Process (MMRP). There are four principles to the MMRP:

1. Problem – The client’s understanding of their problem based on their personal experience.
