Dr. Brad Russell and Dr. Rod Sones recently took a trip to Washington, DC, where they represented Alabama at the American Chiropractic Association's Engage 2024 event and House of Delegates meeting. Their primary focus was on discussions surrounding The Chiropractic Medicare Coverage Modernization Act (H.R. 1610 / S. 799), bipartisan legislation aimed at broadening Medicare beneficiaries' access to chiropractic care.
The Chiropractic Medicare Coverage Modernization Act (H.R. 1610 / S. 799) will empower Medicare beneficiaries with the chiropractic profession’s broad-based, non-drug approach to pain management. This includes manual manipulation of the spine and extremities, evaluation and management services, diagnostic imaging, and utilization of other non-drug approaches that are crucial in national efforts to address the opioid epidemic.

Experiencing pain in your jaw when eating?

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) sits in front of your ears. If you touch it, you can feel it move when you open and close your jaw.

While the joint itself can cause pain, the neck can also contribute to TMJ pain. We could say that they go hand in hand… but it would probably be more accurate to say jaw and neck.

The nervous system serves as the body's intricate communication network, playing a pivotal role in coordinating and regulating various physiological functions. Comprising the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) and the peripheral nervous system, it is responsible for transmitting signals between the brain and different parts of the body.


A healthy posture helps us stand, walk, sit, and lie in positions that place the least strain on supporting muscles and ligaments during movement and weight-bearing activities. Correct posture also:
Helps us keep bones and joints in correct alignment so that our muscles are used correctly, decreasing the abnormal wearing of joint surfaces that could result in degenerative arthritis and joint pain.
Reduces the stress on the ligaments holding the spinal joints together, minimizing the likelihood of injury.
Allows muscles to work more efficiently, allowing the body to use less energy and, therefore, preventing muscle fatigue.
Helps prevent muscle strain, overuse disorders, and even back and muscular pain.

How is depression involved with chronic pain?

Depression is the most common emotion associated with chronic pain. It is thought to be three to four times more common in people with chronic pain than in the general population. In addition, 30 to 80 percent of people with chronic pain will experience some type of depression. The combination of chronic pain and depression is often associated with greater disability than either depression or chronic pain alone.



The neck’s susceptibility to injury is due in part to biomechanics. Activities and events that affect cervical biomechanics include extended sitting, repetitive movement, accidents, falls and blows to the body or head, normal aging, and everyday wear and tear. Neck pain can be very bothersome, and it can have a variety of causes such as: Injury and accidents: Whiplash, Growing older: Degenerative disorders, Osteoarthritis, Spinal stenosis, Degenerative disc disease, Daily life: Poor posture, obesity, stress.

This study developed evidence-based recommendations for treating neck pain in adults through a review of 41 controlled trials. The study concluded that chiropractic care, particularly when using a multimodal approach, showed improved outcomes for both acute and chronic neck pain.



In summary, this study indicates that for older Medicare patients with chronic low back pain and multiple health conditions, those initiating treatment with chiropractic manipulative treatment (CMT) experience lower overall healthcare costs and shorter episodes compared to those receiving conventional medical care.

Quitting smoking is helpful for people with both acute and chronic back pain. Acute back pain is pain that occurs suddenly and is generally short-lived while chronic back pain tends to come about slowly over time but is long lasting. In the case of acute back pain, smoking can make it harder to heal and may even contribute to the pain turning chronic. In short, if someone smokes, “it is complicating their ability to get well and stay well.”
