Morgans Closet
Birmingham Squadron blessed us with tickets so we could bring some of our community partners and volunteers to the game on Thursday night. We were able to invite Birmingham Work Release Officers and families, youth and adults from Greater Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, Youth Towers, Jack and Jill of America, Incorporated, one of our interns, presidents of neighborhoods and community members around American Cast Iron Pipe Company, Morgans Closet, Appleseed Network, Billy Doughty, and more!! We love all our community partners and volunteers getting to know one another. #bettertogether #freefamilyfun #community #weneedeachother #livelikeJesus #loveservesharerepeat #feedbhm

PS. If you want tickets for Tuesday night’s game, PM and let us know how you are connected to GKC and how many tickets you would need. We love you all!!
When Andrea Collins got married for the second time four years ago, it turned out to be the darkest time of her life. Two weeks into the marriage, she began to be abused. She never experienced abuse during the courtship, so what was happening took her by surprise.

The abuse and home life were so bad that she had even Googled how to commit su***de. But one thing that stopped her were thoughts of her daughter, Morgan. She had to be a fighter and survivor for both of them. She researched ways to escape her husband and took classes from the YWCA. After her third attempt to leave, she was finally able to break free after six months of marriage.

Collins credits her daughter for giving her the strength to not give up. In March 2021, Collins started Morgans Closet to remove certain clothing barriers abused women or low-income individuals may face when looking for a job. Morgan’s Closet is located at the back of Nmosa Designs and Fabrics, 5501 First Ave. North, which is not too far from where Collins grew up in Woodlawn.

"I just feel like from my personal (situation), struggling from paycheck to paycheck and just going through that situation ... that I’m a tangible example," she said. "Your current situation is not your forever situation."

On Saturday, March 12 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., she will host a workshop on job interview skills, resume writing and what to wear to work and to an interview. At the end of the class, attendees will be able to pick out three outfits for job interviews and work. Anyone actively seeking a job, may apply. Advance registration may be done at www.morganscloset.org. There will be a 60-day and 90-day follow-up with attendees. Collins also plans to host quarterly sessions.

"We don’t want this to be a one-stop shop and they are left high and dry," Collins said. "Getting the job is just one part. We want to continue to reach out to them." #StrongHER #WomensHistoryMonth

Morgan's Closet works to serve as a connection that inspires and guides disadvantaged women of Birmingham by educating and equipping them to enter the workforce and achieve success.

We do this by guiding women through a round table session where they learn the different types of business casual and business professional dress-codes found in the current workplace. Many of these women are working low-paying jobs where uniforms or casual dress is the norm. They are guided through lessons ranging from proper interview attire to how to put an outfit together. I think Pam Bates, Director of East Lake Initiative and Thrive Jefferson County, is my soul sister. Our stories are so parallel how we felt the calling to start a nonprofit and help others in need. I enjoyed having coffee with her this week, sharing our stories and aligning our nonprofits to partner together in Birmingham.
I’m so appreciative for Pam to share her expertise with me so I can be a better Director.

Ashley attended one of our March workshops. It was such a special time watching her confidence build with each outfit she tried on. She truly sparkled. A mom of three, she’s looking for a clerical job.
We know she will be a great asset to her future employer.

A HUGE thank you to Ellen Cuneo and her amazing girls who volunteered today helping us pull our fall and winter items off racks to make room for spring and summer.

Green Clean is Ellen’s company who holds a special place in my heart. After escaping my abusive marriage and while Morgan and I were in a safe house Ellen gave me the opportunity to clean for her to earn money to get back on my feet. Still dealing with my trauma I was not ready to be around people in a work setting. This role helped me do work I knew I could do in an environment I felt safe in.

Ellen is wonderful to work for and if you need extra income or like me, needing something during a transition period, I can’t recommend enough talking to her.

And if you need any cleaning, whether it’s your home or business, she gives five star service.

Last week we got a call from Alabama Workforce Training Center needing assistance dressing one of their trainees for an upcoming job interview. Due to transportation issues we improvised and one of the instructors met us onsite and via FaceTime we selected three job interview outfits with their trainee. Let’s wish LaTasha good luck this week on her job interviews.

Last week Protective Life held a clothing drive for Morgan’s Closet. Their commitment to supporting the welfare and quality of life in local communities is evident in what I can only call a remarkable outpouring of support.
Our volunteers continue to sort and count an impressive number of women’s job interview outfits that will be available in our workforce training workshops helping women overcome barriers and secure careers in the Birmingham workforce.
The impact the Protective Life team has made with this drive and their belief and support in our mission is profoundly appreciated.
