Happy #NationalVolunteerWeek to all of our VA Volunteers!

In early 2020, more than 160 Volunteers supported the Birmingham VA Health Care System however, the public health emergency required VA to limit volunteer activity. The VA recently opened the door for Volunteers to come back into VA facilities and yesterday, the Birmingham VA Health Care System hosted a reception for our Volunteers as a way to welcome them back and to express gratitude for their continued contributions of service. Our Volunteers were celebrated and showered with tokens of appreciation. Thank you for serving our community of Veterans and their families!

Volunteers provide patient es**rt services, assist with clerical duties, and serve as Hospital Ambassadors; many of the Volunteers are Veterans themselves, but all Volunteers are committed to serving the needs of our Veterans. To become a VA Volunteer at BVAHCS, call 205-933-4396 or email [email protected]. Visit this webpage for more information: https://www.va.gov/birmingham-health-care/work-with-us/volunteer-or-donate/

April 11-17, 2022 is Black Maternal Health Week. This week, the BVAHCS Women’s Health Program brings focus to our Black mothers and ways to keep healthy before, during, and after pregnancy.

A Black woman is three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related problems than a White woman. The main causes are bleeding and preeclampsia/eclampsia (conditions with elevated blood pressures).

What can we do to reduce pregnancy-related complications?
• Early prenatal care and checks during pregnancy by a health care provider.
• Manage chronic medical conditions (i.e., diabetes and hypertension).
• Be aware of warning signs and know when to seek care right away.
* Baby moves slowly or stops moving
* Preeclampsia/Eclampsia symptoms such as high blood pressure, swelling of hands and feet, headache, blurry vision, seizures
* Dizziness/passing out, trouble breathing, chest pain, fast heart rate
* Severe nausea and throwing up
* Fever
* Leg swelling, redness, or pain
* Vaginal bleeding or fluid leaking during pregnancy, heavy vaginal bleeding after delivery (soaking through one or more pads in an hour)
* Thoughts of harming self or baby

Connect with our Women’s Health Maternity Care Coordinator, Natalie Campbell at 205-933-8101, Ext. 334741 for resources and education and/or to enroll in our MOM and More Program.
