🙌

I promise this isn't really about me but without my experience I am not really sure how to tell this story.

Yesterday I was reading from a fit pro that was dark for a long time and then all of a sudden started losing weight and now is super chirpy (which I have to confess, is something I have done in the past, so I am not being critical of that part. Weight loss consumes you sometimes, so I get it).

He talked about hating who he was and how that was a motivating factor for the weight loss.

Now this is a person that KNOWS for fact that to build real muscle you need to gain weight. I am not talking about recomp, I am talking about adding significant muscle.

BUT HATE?

Last year I had surgery for a torn MCL, it took me about two months to make the decision and ultimately go through the process because of COVID.

At that same time I was working on performance so my food choices were really focused on ENERGY DENSITY with a side of nutrient density.

So the injury sort of paralyzed me but I knew that less food wasn't going to help my injury. So I stuck to the plan and in that time I probably put on 10 pounds (maybe 15 at the peak).

The big part of building muscle is that you have to be patient while weighing more but at no point did I look in the mirror with anything other than LOVE.

I love what my body can do, even with limitations. And I will just be frank, I love how I look in the mirror even when I am not super lean. AND I TALK ABOUT THIS ALL OF THE TIME.

The problem with the industry is that even the good guys can't help themselves.

Saying that you suffer from a bad internal narrative might make you relatable but I am not sure it sets a real good example to sell people fitness products and say that you hate it when you aren't super lean.

Isn't that what we are supposed to be doing?

Setting the example?

I remember saying to a friend of mine my goal was going to be to spend the next 10 years building muscle. And so I did it.

Note that I didn't say lean muscle because that's basically impossible.

In that time I have added roughly 20 pounds of muscle and some that isn't muscle.

Which I might deal with at some point or I might not. I don't really have any immediate plans to do so.

But isn't that the point of all of this? I mean if you are in this game for 20-30 years isn't it sad to think you wouldn't have progressed from constantly needing to be single digit body composition?

So what that means is that you have to want to at least love your body wherever you are. I am just speaking as a professional in the industry.

Shouldn't we model that behavior?

I am not saying I never see a picture at a bad angle that I don't love BUT HATE, nah, life is too short for that nonsense.

I have said it before but it's worth repeating, even at my highest weight I LOVED MYSELF. That love is what allowed me to keep going when things got hard.

I haven't seen a lot of people hate themselves lean but I know they exist.

It just feels like love will take you farther and while I am all for honesty it's important that I model that behavior.

It also happens to be true 99.999997% of the time.

So my biggest problem is that I love me some me and so I don't think I am going to ever want to exist in misery just for a temporary and fake reality that isn't sustainable for life.

Nor should that be my narrative to sell to all of you (even though it might make me more relatable).

Roasted Chicken + Butternut Squash + Quinoa Winter Bowls

{My balanced Fit/Food Prep bowls are some of the MOST POPULAR on the CFC site...because people need balanced grab-n-go lunch options! This is a delicious Wintertime spin on the Fitness bowls}

Makes 4 servings
Ingredients:
4 chicken breasts (about 1 lb)
1 small butternut squash, cut into 1/2 inch cubes
4 Tbsp avocado oil, or olive oil
1 cup quinoa
2 cups water, or broth
1/2 cup dried cranberries
1/3 cup chopped parsley/cilantro
1/3 cup thinly sliced green onion
1/2 cup roasted salted pumpkin seeds
1/4 cup feta cheese
1/2 cup fresh pomegranate seeds
sea salt and pepper
fresh lemon wedges to serve
Instructions:
Preheat the oven to 375°f. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Place the butternut squash and the chicken breast on the baking sheet. Drizzle with 2 tablespoons of oil and sprinkle with a generous pinch of salt and pepper. Roast for 25-30 minutes, or until the chicken is tender and cooked through.
Heat the remaining olive oil in a saucepan over medium heat. Add the quinoa to the pan and toast for 3-4 minutes, stirring often. Stir in the water/broth and a generous pinch of salt. Bring the mixture to a boil. Turn down the heat to low and cover the pan; cook for 15-20 minutes, or until the quinoa has absorbed all of the liquid. Take the pan off the heat and allow the quinoa to rest for 5 minutes covered. Fluff with a fork.
Transfer the quinoa to a large serving bowl. Gently fold in butternut squash, cranberries, parsley, scallions, pumpkin seeds, feta cheese, and pomegranate seeds. Squeeze lemon wedges all over and season with salt and pepper to taste.
Divide everything into 4 equal portions.
❤ Rachel

What did you do for food prep this week? I made three pans of these glorious meatballs! I will freeze them, that way I will have them when I need a protein source! I also prepped crockpot chicken, brown rice for protein bowls, roasted broccoli, onions and Brussels sprouts. I have steamer green beans, mixed berries and roasted tomatoes in my freezer ready to go! Cashew milk for smoothies and my favorite cashew yogurts are in the fridge too! Favorite tip: Buy your cheese in blocks shred them yourself, bag, label and pop them in the freezer! I also have fresh bananas and apples ready for snacks, mixed nuts and protein balls👍
