What a joy to revisit this gem by Trevor Weston at the first rehearsal for our April 14 concert! Come and hear how beautifully the text pairs with Bach's "Nach dir, Herr, verlanget mich."

"Bury Me In A Free Land" from The Frances Suite 03/19/2024

It's less than three weeks until we bring our new commission home to Maryland! We were thrilled when Jasmine Barnes told us she had chosen poetry by a fellow Baltimore native for her piece: that of Frances Ellen Watkins Harper. Born a free Black woman in 1825, Harper became widely known as a poet, novelist, teacher, lecturer, abolitionist, suffragist, activist and organizer. Follow the link in the comments to read more about the life and work of this remarkable woman and then get a taste of her poetry in this excerpt from Ruth Naomi Floyd's "The Frances Suite," premiered in 2022 in Philadelphia.

Concerts:
Sunday, April 14, 3 pm, Westmoreland CUCC, Bethesda
Saturday, May 11, 7:30 pm, 2nd Presbyterian Church, Baltimore

Third Practice Thursday makes a comeback to share our excitement about next week's premiere of Jasmine Arielle Barnes' Songs for the People, based on the poetry of Baltimore abolitionist and suffragist Frances Ellen Watkins Harper (1825-1911), and paired with its companion piece, Bach's Nach dir, Herr, verlanget mich. To whet your excitement as well, have a listen to her song Peace from tenor Lawrence Brownlee's Grammy-nominated album "Rising."

If you can't make it to Bethlehem in person, you can listen to the live broadcast on WWFM.org, Tuesday Feb. 13 at 12:10 pm. And if you are nearby, join us and the The Bach Choir of Bethlehem at the Central Moravian Church for a wonderful event!

We had a blast spending part of the weekend in Allentown, digging into Jasmine Arielle Barnes's "Songs for the People" and Bach's Cantata 150. Premiere with the The Bach Choir of Bethlehem one week from tomorrow!
