It's less than three weeks until we bring our new commission home to Maryland! We were thrilled when Jasmine Barnes told us she had chosen poetry by a fellow Baltimore native for her piece: that of Frances Ellen Watkins Harper. Born a free Black woman in 1825, Harper became widely known as a poet, novelist, teacher, lecturer, abolitionist, suffragist, activist and organizer. Follow the link in the comments to read more about the life and work of this remarkable woman and then get a taste of her poetry in this excerpt from Ruth Naomi Floyd's "The Frances Suite," premiered in 2022 in Philadelphia.

To whet your excitement as well, have a listen to her song Peace from tenor Lawrence Brownlee's Grammy-nominated album "Rising."

We had a blast spending part of the weekend in Allentown, digging into Jasmine Arielle Barnes's "Songs for the People" and Bach's Cantata 150.
