Yoga offers personal healing and transformation, and that’s what most of us practice for.
But what’s really amazing is that when we practice we shift from identifying with the mind to identifying with the heart—and that changes everything.
This shift changes the way we perceive the world. We gain the ability to see the world not only through the eyes, but through the heart. We gain compassion and begin to embrace the diversity of humanity.
This is what I lovingly call “rainbow mind,” which is a perception of the world based on love.
Let’s allow the energy of pride to expand from our hearts into our minds so that we can see how we are all unique and simultaneously all the same.
Let’s let that love flow into our actions so we can be a voice for equity and compassion.
For Pride 2024 (and beyond!), I’m sharing a 3-minute audio meditation to help us tap into our Rainbow Mind.

What is your ultimate, most exciting dream as an Accessible Yoga Teacher?
Your most ambitious dream of being an Accessible Yoga Teacher is significant, and I would love to help you achieve it.
So, I spent some time thinking about it:
✨Where do you see yourself in three or five years?
✨Where are you teaching?
✨What population are you serving?
To go somewhere, we need to know where we are going.
Once we have the correct answers to these questions, we can then delve into more profound inquiries, such as:
✨How do you take the first step towards it, jump into the Arena, and start doing the work?
✨How to make a sustainable Yoga career serving the underserved.
✨Do you believe in equality? How does it reflect in your teaching?
✨How do you find purpose in your Yoga teaching career?
We will have a round-table conversation in our next live session and share our stories; then, we will be able to strengthen our sense of community and even hold each other accountable.
Join our live Accessible Yoga Ambassador mentoring session next Tuesday, June 11th, at 9 a.m. Pacific time.
If you are not an Accessible Yoga Ambassador yet, you can become one by clicking on the link in my bio.
We will support each other, stay curious, embrace mistakes, and be creative and nonjudgmental in the process.
Like Lennon used to say, “A dream you dream alone is only a dream. A dream you dream together is reality.”
I look forward to seeing you all next week.
Plenty of love ♥️🌿
Rodrigo 🙏🏾
Ps: We will also have a Seated Accessible Yoga practice to warm us up. So bring your props 🤗

Dear Accessible Yoga Community,
I’m so touched by the outpouring of love and support you shared when we announced that we’re closing our nonprofit and moving programming to the Accessible Yoga School. A lot of gratitude was directed at me personally, which I deeply appreciate. But it’s only part of the story. Accessible Yoga is a community based organization with an awesome staff led by a volunteer Board of Directors, who have given so much of their time and energy.
In particular, I wanted to mention three people who have served as Board President over the course of these past seven years: Marie Prashanti Goodell, Amber Karnes, and Anjali Rao. These three brilliant leaders have made our work possible through their devotion, brilliance, and creativity. I spent countless hours in meetings with all three of them over the years, and almost everything we created was a result of their efforts. I really don’t have the words to express my appreciation and gratitude to all three of them.
I also wanted to give some details about how we’re going about closing the nonprofit. After offering our staff severance pay, our Board voted to donate any remaining funds to eight other small organizations who are working in the field of accessible yoga. These include:
• BareSOUL Wellness, Inc.
• Ashe Yoga
• Guided By Humanity
• Black Boys OM
• Accessible Yoga Tahoe/Accessible Yoga Sacramento
• Trans Futures Project
• Integral Yoga’s Mission District Outreach
• Narika
This process will take a few months to complete, but in the meantime we are busy getting ready to transition our programs to the Accessible Yoga School. I’ll send another message with more details soon.
Thank you for all your support and for being a part of our community.
Love,
Jivana

Beloved AY Community♥️We’re writing with news of some big changes for the Accessible Yoga Association. As a result of multiple factors, we have made the difficult decision to dissolve the nonprofit Accessible Yoga Association. However, that doesn’t mean that we are abandoning our mission or the incredible community we’ve built. We are evolving to meet the unique challenges of our times.
We’ve decided to shift our programming to the Accessible Yoga School. Our current AY Ambassadors will have a seamless transition to a new program that we’re very excited about. Rodrigo Souza, one of our Board members, has agreed to personally support our members with an updated Accessible Yoga Ambassador and Mentorship Program. More details coming very soon.
We want to thank our dedicated volunteer Board of Directors & staff who have worked tirelessly for years upholding their commitment to our mission. This includes: Ashley Williams, Tristan Katz, Ryan McGraw, Sarani Fedman, Priya Wagner, Sunny Barbee, Tamika Caston-Miller, Rodrigo Souza, Avery Kalapa, and Reggie Hubbard. Our amazing team: Brina Lord, Tan Hubbard, Zane Ali, Robyn Bell, as well as previous staff, volunteers, and board members.
It is a symptom of the times that we did not get the support/grants from the heavily resourced yoga organizations that could have ensured our success in an equitable & sustainable way. As a community, this is a good time to reflect on the future of the yoga community and consider where our resources are going and who our leadership is.
For example, Yoga Alliance (with combined assets of over $31 million according to Guidestar) stopped sponsoring our programs a few years ago. And yet in the recent announcement of their five year strategic plan, they have decided to focus on making yoga accessible and equitable, echoing the work we’ve been doing for years.
We look forward to seeing the legacies of this org shape-shift into other incarnations. Thank you to all of you who have supported us for years through your memberships, donations, and by helping to make yoga accessible to so many.
In loving service,
Anjali Rao, Board President
Jivana Heyman, Director
Accessible Yoga Association

Unfortunately, many Yoga instructors are unaware of the physiological risks of aging, and how some commonly-taught yoga poses can be dangerous for older adults. The good news is - we can always learn!
Here are 6 ways to inform your Yoga teaching with older adults:
1. Straight-legged forward bends
2. Seated postures on the floor
3. Head-below-the-heart-inversions
4. Keep the breath flowing and comfortable
5. Keep twists in mid-range with fluid quality of motion
6. Avoid extremes of movement & breathing
With our theme of the month being Yoga and aging, we think it's important for teachers to consider these important tips when teaching to this population. Throughout this month, we'll be sharing resources on this topic.
