Hiking is a great way to explore nature, but did you know invasive species can hitchhike on your boots, clothing, and gear? Seeds, mud, and plant fragments can travel from trail to trail without us even noticing. Before and after your next hike, take a few moments to brush off your boots, clean your gear, and remove any mud or debris. These simple actions help protect forests, grasslands, wetlands, and trails from the spread of invasive species. For more info, visit https://playcleango.org/.

Cal-IPC's Climate Match Tool has been updated! Compare climates across the globe to see whether a plant grows in conditions similar to your region. The tool helps predict whether a plant is likely to establish and become invasive in new areas. Now with updated precipitation, plant hardiness, and ecozone data as well as the ability to select any region across North America.

Teamwork makes the dream work! With funding from USFS and in partnership with the El Dorado County Agricultural Commissioner, Cal-IPC is coordinating the continued control of invasive yellow star thistle on the El Dorado County Fairgrounds, which is used as an Incident Command Post for large fires in the region. W**d control is essential in staging areas such as these to prevent propagules from hitchhiking on personnel and equipment into natural areas.
This photo shows the fairgrounds being used as a base camp for Caldor Fire operations in August 2021.

A HUGE thank you to all those who donated to this year’s Spring Campaign! With your support, we raised over $69,000, blowing our $50K goal out of the water. We appreciate this amazing community for the continued support and for being part of our pledge to Doug Johnson, Executive Director of 24 years, to keep Cal-IPC a leader in advocating for WMAs, sharing resources and tools with land managers, training the next and current generations, and supporting on-the-ground work across the state.

As part of Cal-IPC's workforce development focus, we have teamed up with Oakland Civicorps to create the Civicorps Outdoor Leadership Adventures (COLA) program, where Corpsmembers and Crew Leaders develop project management skills by creating, organizing, and leading outdoor trips for their peers. The most recent trip was a hike along the Cataract Falls trail in Marin to catch all the post-rain waterfalls!
