Finishing my book is on my mind, and the journey I have been on for years.....everyone approaches writing for different reasons, and those reasons shape our journey. I haven't posted much about my journey, perhaps because I quite often wonder if I will ever finish. However, the past couple of days I did something - and I want to share. Perhaps if you are on a long, long journey this may be another tool to explore along the way. Shout out to my friend Hannah (who is not on Facebook) for mentioning this years ago! Yes, years ago. I finally did it. I printed my draft - and cut it apart, with scissors! Then I grouped the cuttings by topic, and placed them in files. Here's what I discovered: the physical cutting apart made me slow down and actually see what I had written, and consider where one thought ended and another began; in grouping the pieces I was able to discover new connections between pieces, and could actually see what I wrote a LOT about, and what I didn't; and finally, this not too time consuming and not to hand crippling activity gave me new insights and ideas about how to structure my book and what needs building or editing.
