Lately there has been a lot of questions and speculation around if LMHC licensure and other forms of therapists are able to provide Autism assessments and diagnoses.

In WA state, we CAN provide these assessments and services. Many of us neuro-affirming providers find it so important, especially now, to be qualified to offer assessments due to the multiple sources that were once considered the top places to turn to, having waitlists years out and providing assessments that are outdated and not affirming to the populations they serve.

While it is important to acknowledge the two main limitations to the diagnosis that someone like myself can provide, it is also essential to know the ways that we have found to make sure they aren’t a barrier to us providing an assessment and still obtaining those things that are beyond our scope that the state allows. Each provider has a different way they like to work through that and it’s important to ask them their process when looking for the provider you want to work with.
