#OTD Operation Desert Shield became Operation Desert Storm as forces of the allied coalition launched an all-out air campaign against targets in Iraq and occupied Kuwait in an effort to liberate Kuwait and enforce the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council. Overall, in the theater of operations, the coalition forces included more than 415,000 U.S. troops.

OTD 1815: U.S. Marines Defend New Orleans During the War of 1812.

The fact that a peace treaty had been signed by American and British diplomats two weeks before the battle was unknown to anyone at New Orleans. The Treaty of Ghent, however, would only become effective - and officially end the war - if it were approved by congress and signed by the president. That happened one month after the Battle of New Orleans. The American victory made sure the war ended when the treaty arrived.

For decades, the Marines who helped secure Okinawa in the final major battle of World War II auctioned off—but never opened— this bottle of whiskey each year at the reunion of the 6th Marine Division Association. Deemed the "last man's bottle," it was passed down over the years until the association's recent final reunion, when the seven surviving members, all of whom are well into their 90s, opened it up and took a drink. Members of the Leatherneck staff were in attendance to cover the bittersweet occasion, which will be featured in an upcoming issue of the magazine. #greatestgeneration #wwii #marines #leatherneckmagazine

On this day, we honor Gold Star Mothers and Families. In 1936, a congressional resolution was passed making the last Sunday in September a day to honor the mothers of fallen service members. It was expanded in 2011 to include Gold Star Families. When a family member changes their service flag’s blue star to gold, it honors and remembers the service of their fallen loved one.

The nation's first community salute to those who have been deployed during the War on Terror.

09/17/2021

During National POW/MIA Recognition Day, our Nation conveys eternal gratitude to those who endured enemy captivity and those who made the supreme sacrifice and have yet to return home. We will stand with these heroes, who gave their all to protect and preserve our freedoms, and their families, who have kept the faith and longingly pursued answers across these many decades.

Each day, this flag flies over memorials and cemeteries, on military installations, at local post offices, and on the front lawns of homes across the Nation. This flag remains a symbol of America’s commitment to honor the sacrifices of all those who serve.

You are not forgotten!
