On April 2, 2022 at 7:50 p.m., West Islip Fire Department was activated for a reported structure fire on Myrtle Ave. The initial report advised that there was a detached garage on fire. Second Assistant Chief Robert Celeste, first to arrive on scene, corrected the report and advised that the actual house was on fire, immediately requested dispatch to transmit a working fire, and notified Bayshore Fire Department as the FAST. Additional reports advised that there was one person trapped inside the house. The first arriving Quint, 3-17-6, immediately performed an aggressive search while extinguishing the fire. The victim was found but unfortunately, succumbed to her injuries and died on scene. The main body of fire was knocked down and overhaul was performed. Mutual aid was provided by the following organizations: Bay Shore Fire Department, Bay Shore Brightwaters Rescue Ambulance, Inc. , Deer Park Fire Department, Brentwood Fire Department, Babylon Fire Department, and West Babylon Fire Department.
On Sunday afternoon February 13th shortly after 2pm the Bay Shore Fire Department was notified for a residential structure fire with a possible occupant trapped on South Bay Ave. First arriving Chief of Department Kevin Butler confirmed the working fire and mutual aid was requested. With conflicting information from the homeowner on the location of their son, an aggressive interior search was conducted. Crews from Engine 3-1-3 stretched hand lines and quickly went to work on the fire. With a tight parking situation Ladder 3-1-7 was able to take the front of the house. All searches were found to be negative, with the missing occupant returning to the scene later on. Assistant Chief Roy Ekelund Jr was the OIC throughout the alarm. Mutual aid was provided by
Brentwood Fire Department, Islip Fire Department, West Islip Fire Department Mohawk Engine Company. Bay Shore Brightwaters Rescue Ambulance, Inc. also operated on scene. The cause of the fire was under investigation by the SCPD Arson Squad and the Town of Islip Fire Marshal’s office.

The alarm was changed to a structure fire and then shortly thereafter was called a working fire. The fire was in the porch and basement area in the front of the home. With Kevin Butler, 3-1-30, in charge, the fire was extinguished in short order followed by overhaul. The scene was subsequently turned over to the town fire marshal’s office and the county police arson squad.

*** Committee Spotlight Monday

This month’s committee spotlight is on our OSHA Committee, undoubtedly one of the most important committees that we have at BSBRA. Required by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the OSHA committee oversees infection control and training of our members.

The Committee is responsible for several operational details including oversight of required disposal and cleaning of contaminated items, maintenance of the equipment that is carried on the ambulance, as well as continually training our members on any changes in OSHA regulation. The OSHA committee was extremely instrumental in during the COVID pandemic, with continual decontamination of our ambulances, equipment, and our headquarters. Normal operations would be greatly affected if not for the hard work and dedication of the OSHA Committee.

The current committee consists of five members and is currently headed by our Designated Infectious Control Officer and Board of Director Korey Heester.

Membership Monday: June 2023

For the month of June, we are honored to celebrate Life Member Jen Davis. Joining in 1991, Jen has served the department faithfully and generously. Currently, she serves as Company Treasurer and Chair of our Dinner Dance Committee. Past responsibilities include riding as both a ALS provider/ Driver and an CPR Instructor.

Professionally, Jen is a Nurse Practitioner at Good Samaritan on the Neurosurgery Unit. She is also a diabetic advocate working as a volunteer RN with the Barton Center, a center which allows children with diabetes the opportunity to enjoy camp-despite their medical challanges. Last January, Jen organized a large scale Cask Ale Festival to benefit the Barton Center. Through her efforts, she raised over $10,000.00 for this organization.

Jen is passionate and generous in everything she does. From handling fund drive donation efforts to ensuring the small ‘special’ details that make our dinner special, Jen consistently goes above and beyond. Most recently, Jen and her husband Tim spent their Memorial Day cooking for our membership. This just exemplifies her compassion, care and generosity. Jen is a wealth of knowledge, a strong patient advocate and we are extremely lucky to have her among our ranks. Thank you for all you do!

Crew/Committee Monday: May, 2023
(Tuesday due to Memorial Day)

This month we pay appreciation to our Wednesday Crew. Our Wednesday members have shown incredible growth over the last year! While young and spirited back at base this crew shows nothing short of sincere compassion and professionalism on the ambulance.

On top of their weekly duties, many of these members take on the responsibilities of many committees and positions within the department. They also love to constantly improve upon on their skills. Each week crew members hold mini trainings as a group and help where they can so their peers can become cleared as techs and drivers.

We can always rely on Wednesdays to keep the department an enjoyable place with things such as their sunset picnics and game tournaments.

Thank you for all that you do!

Memorial Day 2023. We shall never forget the courage and unwavering commitment of our armed forces to secure our freedom. 🇺🇸
