Find The Best Christmas Day in on Main Street at Bay Books!
Hello there,
Last month, at the age of 77, I published my first novel (think Grandma Moses). As you can imagine, I self-published it and didn’t realize I’d have to do most of the marketing myself. This letter is part of my marketing campaign. I came across a listing of most of the independent bookstores in the country and, since I’m retired and have the time, I decided to contact each one, tell you a little about the book and ask you to give it a try. The book is available at Ingram Books. If you’re interested read on, if not thanks for your time.
Me and Jinx
Johnny Fry’s favorite times growing up were when his Uncle Bill would visit, and with Johnny’s pa, they would sit round the stove at night and talk of adventures they had in their youth as riders for the Pony Express. When his pa dies in the Spring of 1884, eighteen-year-old Johnny sets out to ride the Pony Express Trail to Sacramento, nineteen hundred miles away. With his ‘little buddy’, Jinx, a little black cat, he leaves his Kansas hometown and rides into a reality much different from the dreams of his childhood. It’s a reality of sweeping grasslands, towering mountains, simmering deserts, and raging rivers; of drunks, thieves, and murderers; of friends and enemies and someone to fall in love with. The West of 1884 is still the wild and beautiful place of legend. Billy the Kid and Jesse James are not long in their graves, Wyatt and Virgil Earp are alive and living in California, and the great cattle drives are still fresh in the memories of many. Surrounded by the beauty and perils of the Old West, Johnny must become a man or die trying.

How A Former NFL Player Rebuilt His Life After An Encounter With A Stranger | TODAY

Ted Jackson, will be at Bay Books on Saturday, November 28th to sign his book, YOU OUGHT TO DO A STORY ABOUT ME.

Former NFL player Jackie Wallace suffered from addiction and became homeless after his 5-year career as a cornerback ended. When photojournalist Ted Jackson captured an image of him on the streets, the two formed a friendship that turned Wallace’s life around. They are now sharing their story in the book “You Ought To Do a Story About Me.”

How A Former NFL Player Rebuilt His Life After An Encounter With A Stranger | TODAY Former NFL player Jackie Wallace suffered from addiction and became homeless after his 5-year career as a cornerback ended. When photojournalist Ted Jackson ...

Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist, Ted Jackson, will be signing the nationally acclaimed book, YOU OUGHT TO DO A STORY ABOUT ME, at Bay Books on Saturday, November 28th from 11:00am-1:00pm

In 1990, while covering a story about homelessness for the New Orleans Times-Picayune, photojournalist Ted Jackson encountered a man sleeping under a bridge. After taking a photo, Jackson woke the man. Pointing to the newspaper by his side, the homeless stranger looked Jackson in the eye and said, “You ought to do a story about me.” When Ted asked why, he was stunned by the answer.

“Because I’ve played in three Super Bowls.”

That chance meeting was the start of Jackson’s thirty-year friendship with Jackie Wallace, a former NFL star who rose to the pinnacle of fame and fortune, only to crash and lose it all. Getting to know Jackie, Ted learned the details of his life, how racism impacted him, and how he spiraled into the “vortex of darkness” that left him suffering from addiction and living on the streets of New Orleans.

Ted chronicles Jackie's life from his childhood and turbulent teenage years in the segregated South, through college and the NFL, to the unfortunate end of his professional career and the untimely death of his mother—a multitude of events that led him into a spiral of addiction and homelessness. Throughout, Ted pays tribute to the enduring friendship he shares with this man he has come to know and look at as a friend and inspiration. Ted speaks frankly about the vulnerability of their relationship.

Tragic and triumphant, poetic and evocative, YOU OUGHT TO DO A STORY ABOUT ME offers a rare glimpse into the precarious worlds of homelessness and poverty. Ted's account is a timeless tale about loss, redemption, and hope.
