If you've driven down Burbank near LSU, you know this story all too well.

For more than a decade, the Walk On's off Burbank has dealt with the same recurring nightmare: flooding that turns the parking lot into a lake, traps cars, and keeps customers away.

"It's crippling for business," says Dustin Loveless, who's worked at the restaurant for 10 years. "They can't get to us or they have to turn the other way, the parking lot turns into a mess."

But here's the new concern: with major developments like Sterling Southgate and the LSU arena project underway, Loveless worries the problem is only going to get worse.

"All that runoff, all that cement that's going to be over there, it's only going to increase this problem," he said.

We reached out to the city for answers about what's being done to fix this longstanding drainage issue. You can see their response at the link in the comments.

MAJOR FUNDING FOR WEST FELICIANA JAIL REPLACEMENT

The West Feliciana Parish jail, built in 1948, is expected to get the replacement it needs.

Sheriff Brian Spillman says the current facility just isn't cutting it anymore. "It's not meeting our needs as far as space, we're starting to have some maintenance problems with it," he said.

Thanks to a major data center deal with Hut-8, the Sheriff's Office will receive $800,000, some of that money going towards developing plans for a new prison. The funding is part of a $10 million prepayment expected in July, according to officials.

The current jail holds 39 inmates. Sheriff Spillman hopes to expand capacity to 150 with a new prison as funding becomes available.

"This is a generational thing for us, this is something that is changing the course of West Feliciana parish forever," Spillman said.

The parish is expected to receive $90 million a year for the next 15 years from the lease agreement, with funds going toward infrastructure, education, and law enforcement.

Construction on the Hut-8 data center off Highway 61 isn't expected to be complete until late 2027, but the prepayment means improvements can start much sooner.

After a record-breaking first season that saw 110,000 fans pack the Raising Canes River Center, the Baton Rouge Zydeco seemed unstoppable. Fast forward to 2026, and the team is closing its doors for good — with no official announcement from the team itself.

River Center officials say they made every effort to keep hockey in Baton Rouge, but the decision ultimately came down to team ownership and staff. Fans have been left wondering what happened, especially after attendance dropped dramatically over the past three seasons.

Zydeco President Don Lewis couldn't immediately be reached for comment, but a recent social media post hinted at saying goodbye to staff members — some of whom are now without jobs.

So what led to the collapse of a team that started with so much promise? And is there any hope for hockey's future in Baton Rouge? River Center officials have something to say about that.

Big changes are coming to the University Lakes — and it’s a long time in the making. 🚧

A project that’s been in the works since 2016 is focused on improving water quality and making the lake paths safer and more connected for people who walk, run, and bike around the system. Project leaders say they’ve secured $81 million in taxpayer funding so far, with $56 million already spent — but more money is still needed to build out the next round of upgrades, including wider paths and better lighting in areas that sit close to traffic (like along Stanford Avenue).

And one more timeline note: construction on May Street won’t be complete until early 2027 — after football season.
