It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Maryland Batiste. He was often the first face people would see when coming in to the shop and he always had a smile to spread around.

The world is a little less bright without that smile and we will all miss him so very much. We love you Maryland.

“We don’t need to lose this institution,” says Maryland, “it’s like family and a home away from home. If we lose this place, I wouldn’t know what to do.”

1 year ago today I started a petition to save a coffee shop in Baton Rouge called Highland Coffees. Within a day multiple people came together to form Save Highland Coffees and through our work we succeeded in our mission.

Public meetings drawing dozens of people, thousands of signatures on our public petition, and a whole media campaign. A few months later the landlord agreed to price out the best coffee shop near LSU.

It may seem silly to do so much for a coffee shop, but it's one of the few places I can go in Baton Rouge and know that I'm accepted as who I am. I met some great people during this part of my life and I am fine being remembered as someone who waged a war to save a coffee shop.

Highland Coffees Online Store - Baton Rouge, LA 11/12/2014

One month ago today we found out that our effort, built right here through social media, succeeded in keeping our favorite coffee shop open! Highland Coffees is here to stay and it's thanks to y'all!

In celebration of our achievement everyone who can, should take some time to head over to Highland and buy a Hot chocolate for themselves, and pass on the love by purchasing the next persons drink too. Lets continue to show this community how grateful we are for this amazing place.

If you can't stop in the shop take a moment and buy something from the online shop: http://shop.highlandcoffeesbr.com/

Congratulations on Saving Highland Coffees, but the fight isn't over yet! The underlying mission of this movement was about saving a local business.

So, let's keep doing that. When you're buying your Christmas presents and other holiday gifts try buying from a local business.

Post a link here to a local business that people can choose from and lets keep our money local!

It is our pleasure to announce that Clark Cadzow and Hank Saurage have come to an agreement about lease terms and have finalized a new lease.

I think it is important to thank the people that made this success possible, you.

Without your support this would not have been possible.

Over the past month we have shown Baton Rouge leaders that local businesses are important to our community and that we will defend them!

Thank you all so much for helping us win this campaign to
