Healthy Habits: Stay Safe at the Beach! 🏖️

The beach is a fun and exciting place to visit — just remember to stay safe! It’s a great opportunity to teach your child about hydration, sun protection, water safety, and the importance of supervision. Helping them understand why safety matters supports their health and well‑being as they learn to navigate unfamiliar environments. Letting your child help pack basic first‑aid items and beach supplies, and exploring the wonders of the beach together, can make learning about safety even more fun! 😎🐬

Most teens and preteens use social media, and while there’s plenty of good online, there are also risks. Cyberbullying, privacy concerns, exposure to harmful content, and negative impacts on mental health are all important issues to be aware of. Teaching your children to be kind online, think before they post, use privacy settings, and avoid interacting with strangers can help keep them safe. And remember—kids learn from what they see, so set a positive example through your own social media use.

Healthy Habit: Sunscreen!
Staying in the shade, wearing hats, and applying sunscreen are all great ways to protect your child from the sun! When you see “SPF” on a sunscreen label, it represents how strongly the sunscreen protects against UVB rays, which can cause sunburns and skin cancer. You should also look for the term “broad spectrum,” which means the sunscreen also protects against UVA rays, the ones responsible for skin damage and aging. And of course, always check the label and reapply at the recommended time!

Did you know that many kids can be picky eaters, but there are ways around it? First, you can start by offering choices of healthy foods to try. Giving encouragement and setting a good example makes your child more likely to try new foods than sneaking or forcing them to eat. Adding new foods to dishes your child already likes can also make the new food feel less intimidating. For example, if a child likes peanut butter, offer apple slices or celery with peanut butter instead of serving the new food on its own.

Healthy Habit: Proper Washing! It’s important that your child knows how to properly bathe and wash themselves! This helps protect them from germs and the buildup of dirt, sweat, and whatever else they’ve gotten into that day. Common issues that can arise from not bathing properly include skin infections and fungal infections. You can help your child look forward to bath time by adding toys and bath songs!
