Many Veterans assume that without direct combat experience, a PTSD claim is automatically weaker or disqualified.
That is not accurate.
Under ๐ฏ๐ด ๐๐๐ฅ ๐ฏ.๐ฏ๐ฌ๐ฐ(๐ณ), the VA recognizes multiple PTSD stressor categories, including:
โ
Combat stressors
โ
Fear of hostile military or terrorist activity
โ
Non-combat stressors such as accidents, traumatic events, or military sexual trauma (MST)
The difference is not whether the claim โcounts.โ The difference is the level of evidence required to support it.
Non-combat PTSD claims often require stronger documentation, such as:
๐ Service records
๐ Buddy statements
๐ Medical evidence
๐ Behavioral markers related to the event
VA Form 21-0781 also plays an important role in documenting and verifying the stressor.
Understanding how PTSD claims are evaluated can help Veterans better understand available pathways and documentation standards.

Veterans deserve to feel prepared, not uncertain, throughout the VA process. ๐ช

โMy condition isnโt serious enough.โ
โI didnโt serve in combat.โ
โI can still work, so I donโt qualify.โ
These are some of the most common reasons Veterans hold back from filing a claim, but they donโt reflect how VA disability actually works under Title 38 of the United States Code.
VA compensation is based on **service connection, not assumptions about severity or type of service**.
And in many cases, eligibility extends further than most Veterans realize, including conditions linked secondarily under 38 CFR ยง 3.310.
The real impact of these myths?
Veterans delay filing, submit incomplete claims, or never apply at allโdespite potentially qualifying.
Misinformation doesnโt just confuse, it can directly affect long-term benefits and outcomes.

Waiting too long to act on your VA claim could mean being evaluated under a completely different set of rules. ๐ณ
The VA is proposing major changes to how conditions like sleep apnea, tinnitus, and mental health are ratedโshifting focus toward functional impairment rather than diagnosis alone.
โ
While current ratings have certain protections, any new claims or requests for increase may be subject to updated criteria that could significantly impact outcomes.
๐ Read the full article to understand what is changing and how these updates may affect your next claim or rating decision.

He said he was โfine.โ
But his service records said otherwise. ๐คฏ
William L., a Vietnam Veteran never reached out for help himself, his wife did.
By the time they connected, he was already dealing with early-stage Alzheimerโs.
He could still talk about Vietnam, but like many Veterans, he would always say the same thing:
โI didnโt do anythingโฆ Iโm fine.โ ๐ค
But when his records were reviewed, a different story started to appear.
His DD214 showed medals and decorations that pointed to combat involvementโsomething he never fully acknowledged himself.
Before this, they had already tried to get help.
๐ด They contacted multiple VSOs.
๐ด Calls werenโt returned.
๐ด No clear direction was given.
Frustration built over time, until his wife asked for someone, anyone, to take a closer look.
At that point, he was rated at 0%.
And there were real challenges:
โ He didnโt have complete medical records.
โ He couldnโt clearly explain his experiences anymore.
โ And a strong connection between his service and condition hadnโt been established.
So instead of relying on what he could say now, the focus shifted to what was already available.
โ๏ธ His medical diagnoses were reviewed.
โ๏ธ His service records and decorations were used as supporting evidence.
โ๏ธ Statements from his wife helped fill in the gaps.
โ๏ธ Even past recordings of him talking about his experiences were considered.
Piece by piece, the full picture came together.
What changed? The result was a 100% Permanent & Total disability rating, along with Aid & Attendance support for his wife. ๐ฏ๐ซก
This meant:
โจ Full monthly compensation
โจ Additional support for his caregiver
โจ Access to long-term care and benefits
He didnโt fully understand what had just happened.
But his wife did.
After years of searching for answers, being turned away, and feeling like no one was listening, this was the first time everything finally made sense on paper.
For her, it wasnโt just a decision.
It was confirmation that what he went through had always mattered. ๐ช
Some cases donโt move forward because the Veteran canโt explain everything anymore.
But that doesnโt mean the evidence isnโt there.
If you or your family feel like something has been overlooked, it may be worth taking a closer look at whatโs already documented, and what hasnโt been fully connected yet. ๐บ๐ธ
