MORE THAN JUST FIREFIGHTERS

Did you know the City of Batavia maintains a technical rope rescue team?

Our Special Ops cover many different disciplines, including rope rescue, ensuring whatever the emergency may be the City of Batavia is prepared to respond.

Last night City of Batavia joined Genesee County ESU training at Indian Falls practicing several evolutions that would require a technical rescue. Evolutions included rescuing a patient from over a ledge, repelling medics to treat/assess the patient, packaging the patient and removing the patient from the hazard.

Community Connect

Community Connect is a secure, easy to use platform that allows residents to share critical information about their household in order to aid first responders and emergency service personnel to respond more efficiently and effectively; ultimately resulting in better incident outcomes.

In addition to the residential portal, Community Connect also helps business owners and managers keep people at their commercial properties safe by giving First Responders access to critical documents such as evacuation procedures, occupant rosters, hazardous material lists and more. Additionally, designated contacts at properties that joined the program will receive immediate alerts via text message when First Responders are dispatched to the building address.

Community Connect is completely voluntary and residents are individually able to decide which information they are comfortable sharing. Residents simply create a profile and enter critical property and occupant information which is then made available to public safety agencies at the time of dispatch. Data provided by residents within Community Connect is 100% secure and is used only for the purpose of better serving the resident during emergency situations.

To learn more about the program and to create your profile, please watch the video and visit:

Today August 5th we honor & remember Captain Loren Michel who paid the ultimate sacrifice for his service.

On Thursday August 5, 1965 at 2:57pm the City of Batavia Fire Department received several calls reporting a fire at 402 Bank Street. Captain Loren Michel was in charge that day and entered the home without a mask, a common practice in 1965. According to the Batavia Daily News, Chief Brocker said that Captain Michel had suffered minor burns to his chest.

After Captain Michel exited the house he sat under a tree as Firefighter Frank Huburt gave him some oxygen. Wilbur H. Hinz of Alexander who had been president of the Western New York Volunteer Fireman's Association and close friend arrived and offered to take Captain Michel back to the station to rest. While on the way back to the station Captain Michel thought he should go to the hospital for some more oxygen.

Upon his arrival at Genesee Memorial Hospital Captain Michel walked in under his own power and asked Hinz to tell his wife that he had gotten a little smoke and would be home in a little while and not to worry. By the time Hinz had returned to the hospital Captain Loren Michel had died of his injuries.

Captain Loren J. Michel was born in Batavia March 22, 1911 and received permanent appointment to the Fire Department on February 1, 1941. He was promoted to Captain on April 1, 1962. As reported in the Batavia Daily News on August 6, 1965 Captain Michel was the "best known city fireman in Genesee County". In March of 1965 the Captain was named "Fireman of the Year" and honored for 17 years of service as a mutual aid instructor for Genesee County. At the time of his death Captain Michel was survived by his wife Ruth and daughter Carol.

After 23 years of service to the City of Batavia Sunday night Capt Greg Ireland worked his last shift before retirement. Greg has been employed with the city since 1999, promoted to Firefighter in 2002, promoted to Lieutenant in 2015 and promoted lastly to Captain in 2018.

Greg's tenure at CBFD included countless EMT classes instructed, fire prevention programs conducted, establishing the first ever FD location in NYS of the PAARI program (Police Assisted Addiction & Recovery Initiative), MDA boot drives and various community programs.

Most significantly Greg led Local 896 as President for many years. L896 is grateful for all the hard fought benefits that Greg secured the union ensuring health & safety for all ranks and our families. His leadership is irreplaceable, L896 will forever be thankful for Greg's dedication.

To a long, happy & healthy retirement!
