Gmail Scam Alert!

The attacker sends a boobytrapped email to a prospective victim. Affixed to that email, there appears to be a regular attachment, say a PDF document. Nothing seemingly out of the ordinary.

But the attachment is actually an embedded image that has been crafted to look like a PDF. That embedded image links out to a fake Google login page. And this is where the scam gets really devious.

Celebrity deaths are used by bad guys for their own criminal purposes. Don't be a victim of these scams. Never click on links in emails or text messages promising you photographs, videos or even new information about celebrity deaths.

Don't go to unfamiliar websites to find such information because your computer may get infected with malware or your identity stolen just by browsing the website without clicking on any links.

For more information about these events, only go to reliable, reputable sites where you normally go. Remember, Think Before You Click!

I have seen a rash of questions online by Mac users regarding a tech support scam. You get a pop up from what looks like your computer, it warns you about a new virus, and recommends you call tech support. This is bogus support, and often leads you to install remote access software on your computer giving the scammer access to your files.

If you have gotten this alert, and especially if you called the number, please contact us! Scott, your local computer guy, can check your computer to see if it has been compromised.

Several clients have contacted me in the last couple of days regarding unsolicited tech support telephone calls advising they are from Microsoft and have detected problems with your computer. This is a scam. Microsoft (or any other large tech giant) is not monitoring your computer for problems. The scammer will try to get you to install remote access software which can then be used at a later time to gain access to your computer without your knowledge. Since the remote access software itself is a legitimate program with legitimate uses to the right people, your antivirus software will have no effect.
