NJ Division of Fish and Wildlife recently announced they are investigating the disease that has been affecting certain species of songbirds in parts of the US including NJ. The cause of the disease or even what it is remains unknown, but it is believed that the disease spreads where birds congregate. In some states where reports of affected birds are numerous it has been recommended that you take down your feeders, and even remove bird baths. At this time the NJ Division of Fish and Wildlife does not make an official recommendation to take your feeders down, but if that changes we will announce additional recommendations.
Birds species affected: mainly blue jays, starlings, common grackles,, robins and cardinals
NJ Audubon strongly recommends that you are diligent about keeping feeders and bird baths clean. General practice for cleaning feeders includes:
• Clean them once per week by taking them apart (check with the bird feeder manufacturer on how to do that) and hand wash either with soap and very hot water or with a dilute bleach solution (no more than 1 part bleach to 9 parts water).
• Keep feeders (and seed) as dry as possible to reduce seed clumping and/or mold. Consider taking them down in rain and/or at night to lessen condensation. Maintain fresh water in bird baths, scrub daily to remove droppings.
• Inspect the ground below your feeders for any mold build up from fallen seeds that ground feeding birds will eat.
Lastly, keep a lookout for birds that are acting strangely. NJ Division of Fish and Wildlife requests that if you spot birds exhibiting eye issues, head tremors, difficulty walking or inability to stand to contact them at 877-WARN-DEP immediately.
