In my house, it was the sound of the percolator. I can still hear it in my mind. How about you?
There was a moment in the morning that meant the day was really starting.
It was not a phone alarm.
It was not a playlist.
It was not a screen lighting up the room.
It was the sound of that metal lid popping open.
That soft hiss of trapped coffee escaping.
That smell that filled the whole kitchen before anyone even took a sip.
You could smell it from down the hall.
From your bedroom.
From the back door.
That smell meant Mom or Dad was already up.
Already moving.
Already getting ready to face the day.
It meant someone was going to work.
Someone was paying the bills.
Someone was carrying the weight of the house on their shoulders.
It was not fancy.
It was not foam.
It was not art in a cup.
It was just coffee.
Strong.
Simple.
Honest.
The kind that warmed your hands and your heart at the same time.
The kind that tasted like mornings and responsibility.
And somehow…
That smell still lives in your memory.
Even when the kitchen is quiet now.
