Founded in Baltimore, a campaign created to combat animal abuse & support the most vulnerable. Today, Show Your Soft Side, Inc.

Show Your Soft Side is a public service campaign that was created to change the mindset of young people who all-too-often view the maiming and torturing of defenseless cats and dogs as a sign of “toughness” or “manhood.” The campaign’s message that compassion towards animals is a strength, not a weakness, is one that struck a chord with young and old alike. uses its reach and resources to build a better world for animals and, in doing so, build better adults.

Here’s hoping it’s contagious.

Virginia lawmakers are moving to legally recognize what many pet parents already feel.

A bill that passed unanimously in the state Senate would classify cats and dogs as “family” under Virginia law. The proposal also strengthens penalties for abandonment and intentional cruelty, with consequences that could include up to five years in prison or fines of up to $2,500.
Supporters say the measure reflects the evolving role pets play in households across the state while creating clearer legal consequences for serious harm. The bill now advances in the legislative process.

In honor of Veterinary Appreciation Day, Bubs, Raj, Hudson, Teddy Bear, Pennie, Leo and Nacho would like to send head butts and purrs to our Street Kitty Fund Vets. They’re the heroes who always go the extra mile to give these discarded cats back their health and their lives, and all of us at SYSS (as well as the 247 others who have benefited in 2026, but aren’t pictured) are eternally grateful. ❤

His name is Petrie, but he also answers to Mr. Wobbles. And no, he doesn’t have any neurological issues, instead he had an encounter with a baseball bat (the intentional kind) that left him with limited sight and intermittent “tippiness” when walking, all of which just adds to his overall charm.

Fortunately, the traumas of his past haven't done a thing to dim his happy-go-lucky nature or his love for people, head bumps and warm laps. (And, yes, in that exact order.) This little guy deserves a very special home and would do great with compassionate adults, savvy older children and kitty siblings. With the temps rising, it doesn’t take long for a car’s temp to rise above 90 even when it’s 70 outside. While Maryland does NOT have a Good Samaritan law, it’s still ILLEGAL to leave a pet unattended in your vehicle. And you can still take action. Call 911 asap and document with photos or videos. And don’t leave until emergency responders arrive.

A dog left inside a parked vehicle on a warm day may have only minutes before conditions become life-threatening. As awareness of that danger grows, more states are adopting or expanding Good Samaritan laws that allow people to rescue animals trapped in hot cars without fear of legal consequences.

Our hearts are full ❤️❤️ Notes like this from Kyara remind us why we do what we do. After a recent Gotcha Day program was held with 32 third graders at Milbrook Elementary School we got lots of similar notes. Through Gotcha Day, students learn about kindness, empathy, responsible pet care and the special bond between animals and people. Seeing these lessons resonate with young people - and knowing they are carrying them forward - is the greatest reward.

Thank you, Kyara, for your thoughtful note and thank you to all the students and teachers (especially ) at Milbrook for welcoming us. If you’d like to know more about our Gotcha Day program, see below.
