Recruit Class 2022-1

Tonight they graduate, but we started celebrating this morning. Recruit Class 2022-1 participated in a ceremony this morning in which they burned their recruit shirts, signaling that with tonight's graduation ceremony they will be leaving behind the recruit academy and joining our crews as probationary firefighters.

We couldn't be prouder of these dedicated, hard-working individuals, and we're so immensely excited to spend today celebrating their achievements.

Last night Engine 142 had the very cool opportunity to escort three women running for The Great American Relay from Station 142 to Wayne Township's Station 84. The Great American Relay is a coast-to-coast running relay that spans 3,446 miles, 490 firehouses, 36 days, and 17 states (plus DC). Per their website, they run "in solidarity for first responders and military that keep us safe every day," and their charity partners include the Green Beret Foundation, the Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.), and the Firefighter Five Foundation. More information can be found at www.greatamericanrelay.com--check out this awesome event!

Check out some highlights from our kickball game against the Avon Indiana Police Department last night! Thanks to @avonajaa for having us!

What a fantastic three days we've had! We're sorry to see this year's Jr. Police and Fire Academy come to an end, but we've had an amazing time beating the heat with some great hands-on fun! Thank you to our sponsors, our participants, our crew members, and all of the academy admin staff that helped to put this thing on! See you next year Avon Indiana Police Department!

Two down and one to go! The second day of the 2022 Jr. Police and Fire Academy was a great success (with much more manageable heat at the Avon Indiana Police Department building) with hands-on explorations of our two departments' equipment, demonstrations by the APD K9 unit, and a presentation on fire investigations from the Fire Marshal! Check out the video below and see you all tomorrow for Day 3 and graduation!

It was sunny and extremely warm, but Day 1 of the 2022 Avon Jr. Police & Fire Academy was a great success! Big thank you to Cedar Elementary for the use of their facility, Applebee's for supplying lunch, and of course all of our WTAFD crew members and our friends over at the Avon Indiana Police Department for their hard work today! More fun to come tomorrow!

Rest in peace, brother. You will be missed more than you could know. #LastCall

It was an absolutely beautiful morning to welcome Station 144 into the fold. Thank you to the members of our community and the professionals who all helped to bring this station to life, and thank you to the men and women who will be serving at this new location. We're excited for this new stage in our journey to keep our community safe and we can't wait to show you more of Station 144 in the coming days!

We still have spots open for our 2022 Jr. Police & Fire Academy! Check out what your child could get up to with this video from Day 2 of last year's academy! Register by Monday, May 9th, here: https://wtp.recdesk.com/Community/Program/Detail?programId=1401

Citizens surprise the Washington Township Avon Fire Department
Live presentation of a special surprise for the Washington Township Avon Fire Department from a group of citizens in our community!

Best way to beat the heat? Obviously to have some fun with hydrants and hoses! This week, our Civilian Firefighter Academy participants worked with Engine 141's crew on engine operations, learning the ins and outs of dousing some fires.

They say first impressions are everything, and this past weekend our firefighters had the best of the best. Watch Acting Battalion Chief Bessler give our participants in the Avon Band Community Day wing- and doughnut-eating contest the introduction of the century!

It's finally here: the video that says a thousand words... about how fire definitely won the Avon Band Community Day wing-eating competition against the Avon Indiana Police Department . It was hard-fought and blisteringly hot, going into overtime where the APD clinched their victory, but we won't dismay at the loss. We'll be back next year to wing back the coveted chicken trophy. See you next year APD!

Crushing and cutting and breaking, oh my! Check out our Civilian Firefighter Academy participants going through the process of vehicle extrication with Ladder Crew 141!

Swiftwater Rescue training 8/24/2021
Seven (7) members of our department are in Columbus Indiana this week for a swiftwater rescue class. This video is from today's class where they are learning to aggressively swim across a "river channel". Working on their ferry angle to let the river current push them across the river.

Day 2 of the Civilian Firefighter Academy is in the books! This week our Engine and Medic crews from Station 141 brought in some hands-on EMS learning experiences! On top of a lesson on the history of EMS, our participants were able to try their hands at intubation, medication administration, cardiac monitoring, ultrasound administration, and basic life support techniques!
