I think the sad thing about boiled eggs is that you don’t have any idea how gorgeous they were before you peeled them. These came from a sweet client’s hens and went into some tuna salad for a friend who just had a baby. Everything is feeling so sweet and fertile after last night’s full moon.

Everyone forgets about the parachute, but honestly that’s a great way to look at it, your baby continues to get oxygen through the cord as they are transitioning to breathing. #delayedcordclamping #homebirth #midwivesdoitbetter

Meal Prepping was the topic of discussion in this morning’s prenatal. How are you supposed to meal prep during pregnancy when cravings and aversions change with the wind? My sweet client said she is just making 3 dinners these days and they all have to eat at different times. We laughed at the absurdity of the situation but it’s just her family’s reality right now. She eats what she can eat when she can eat it and that’s okay. I can’t tell you how many bunches of kale died in my refrigerator when I was pregnant, best intentions at the farmers market, terrible morning sickness the rest of the week with a strong aversion to anything green. C’est la vie!

Nursing in the bath tub was my favorite bonding time. It was also my self care for a long time. We talk a lot about self care for recovery for postpartum in the first weeks, and getting a break from baby after nursing is well established, but what are the things you do with your baby that fill your cup?

6 days in a tent by the lake with my babies. Our longest camping trip and my least prepared to date… 1 thunderstorm, 1 prenatal visit in the grass, and 1 trip into town for a quick birth. My heart is happy. Sweaty at 11pm. Sunburned. Exhausted. But really really happy.

My first Mother’s Day. I could post about how this boy changed me and how blessed I am to be his mama. Those things are true, I love my kids more than anything, but I have been thinking about motherhood and this holiday all week. This is a new first Mother’s Day for me... this is my first Mother’s Day as a single mom. It has been an emotional day to say the least. My 9 year old is crying in time out. This was never the plan. I was not supposed to be mothering my children on a coparenting schedule. Dealing with tiny people and big feelings alone much of the time. I noticed a neighbor and his son completing a picnic table this morning- obviously a well deserved Mother’s Day gift for a saint of a woman with two rowdy boys. I saw another neighbor carefully mowing the front lawn, navigating around the wild flowers. A mix of jealousy and also relief. I wished for that kind of mother’s day for so long. Now it can just be something altogether different. I’m coming to terms with reality, that I’m mourning a future family that never would have existed even without the divorce. I’m also looking at this picture- my very first Mother’s Day. Just me and my baby at brunch with my Dad. For the mamas with children too little to show their appreciation and nobody there to help them. Happy Mother’s Day to you most of all.

I was thinking about the experience of being in a holding pattern in life today, when you know what the next step is but you or your circumstances aren’t quite aligned to do the thing just yet. It feels a lot like the third trimester waiting for labor in your due time. Staying close to home, making plans with a caveat, emotional swings and shifts, there’s an expiration date but there are also a lot of unknowns and uncertainties... How do you cope with life in a holding pattern?

reposted because I am so incredibly grateful for our healthcare workers- I consider myself healthcare adjacent, as I typically only have “normal, healthy” patients/clients but I have a public health background and worry for my friends and colleagues caring for covid + patients during this pandemic • @the.reproductive.psychiatrist Working on my gratitude today because I’m sick of being stuck at home all weekend😆.

As Austin prepares for hospital overflow, I just want to say how grateful I am for all of the healthcare workers helping people right now. We all know (now) how much it sucks to wear a mask for more than a few minutes. Our healthcare workers are wearing typically 2 masks at a time lately (N95 + surgical), plus eye shields, gowns, gloves, hair coverings, etc. They change going to and from work to protect their families. Some work overtime and some are volunteering their time, because we are more short on workers than beds/supplies. While some people sit comfortably in their homes with their pajamas still on, complaining to whoever will listen that this is all overblown, healthcare workers are working their butts off trying to take care of others. So thank you! To each and every one of you!

Reposted because Texas has staggering numbers and we are facing a disaster • @feministmidwife I noticed we’ve all stopped talking about it, so maybe people think it’s better? It’s not; we are just too strapped for time to talk about how bad it still is, and talking/screaming/sobbing about it never changed anything at the beginning anyway. We. (here, the collective all of us) Are. Still. In. The. Middle. Of. A. Pandemic. We (here, the collective healthcare workforce) are still without enough PPE, and now operate within systems where our employers no longer provide assurance that version 5-6ish of oN95s are just as good as any other, and that processing N95s multiple, multiple times does not decrease their efficacy in any way. We now don reusable gowns that are processed and brought back damp, but are supposedly fine. We don’t have time to think about how awful it is to use the same PPE for multiple patients over an entire shift because there’s no other option. People are showing up en masse like before #covid19 not understanding that just because the people they know who got it only lost their sense of smell could have been those who either died or recovered only to now struggle with permanent lung incapacity. While some of the general public are finding new ways to thrive through some tier-three bu****it capitalist rationales around social distancing, the people tasked with taking care of y’all cannot because we just assume we are vectors all the time AND WE KNOW HOW BAD IT STILL IS. If only folx could consider changing to what their healthcare professional does we might then truly have a public health approach to returning to a prism of normal. Apparently it also bears repeating that flu season is coming, which means 1) people recovered from COVID who have increased morbidity and mortality from the flu 2) people may easily become coinfected 3) if it’s a nasty flu more people will seek acute healthcare because of it and increase their exposure and 4) all of this will still mostly affect low income / immigrant / working class / older / incarcerated / detained / crowded-housed / unhoused / immunocompromised. #stfh #midwifinginapandemic #coronavirus #weneedppe

My mom has been telling me to watch this show Mrs. America @mrsamericatv for a few months now- and I’m stuck in bed with a yucky staph infection via mosquito bite so I finally gave in to binge watch it. This show is so good y’all. This time period was the backdrop of our mothers’ childhoods and our grandmothers’ adult lives. It is so eye opening to see how and why women have voted against their own interests, and some of the twisted rhetoric still present today in the anti-feminist, anti-choice and “all lives” arguments. Patriarchy puts white men on a pedestal and subjugates the rest of us, but white women play a role in keeping them up there. We have a chance to push this country forward, after 4 years of whatever the f**k we are going to call Trump’s dark age, and we can’t afford to fizzle out!

In school we were taught that it took two years to tell the slaves in Texas they were free and the civil war was over because news traveled slow in the 1860s (if we heard about Juneteenth at all) but the truth is it just took that long to send union soldiers to enforce the emancipation proclamation in Texas- the news traveled by telegraph two years prior.

https://gf.me/u/x7cax5 Midwife CE is leading the charge and I can’t wait for @mcdonald_herbalist to be a midwife. Some people you just love the moment you meet them, and Raichal is one of those people, she is warm and kind and thoughtful. She has the heart and the hug of a midwife. 💜 If you go look at the Austin resource list of birth workers of color that 💛 @heartofgoldbirth 💛just put together you will see just how few 🤎black midwives we have in the Central Texas area and the more we support Raichal the faster that list grows. 💗💗I’m sure you are aware by now what the stats on maternal and infant mortality are like for Black women and babies in Texas. Having a care provider who looks like you can not be the exception. Black midwives are saving women and babies and we need more black midwives! 🤰🏻👩🏻‍⚕️🤰🏼👩🏼‍⚕️🤰🏽👩🏽‍⚕️🤰🏾👩🏾‍⚕️🤰🏿👩🏿‍⚕️• @midwifece 🌟 link in profile. 🤰🏽Help Midwife CE in rallying around and supporting this future Black midwife as she completes her education. 🤱🏾Who is Raichal Reed?
Raichal is a mother, doula, student midwife, and the volunteer coordinator for a non-profit that offers labor support to low income families who cannot access doula care. She is a dedicated leader in the fight to end racial disparities in maternal health. 🤰🏿Why offer support?

Raichal is completing the PEP program to become a Certified Professional Midwife. Student loans are not an option with this path. She has faced discrimination throughout her education and Midwife CE would love your help in showing her how loved and valued she is in our profession. 🤰🏾Any amount that you can spare will add up in the end. Let’s join together to encourage and support this soon to be midwife in her journey. LINK IN PROFILE 🤱🏾#womenrising #midwife #doula #birth #studentmidwife #apprenticemidwife #equityatwork

glo·ry
/ˈɡlôrē/

noun
1.
high renown or honor won by notable achievements.

2.
magnificence or great beauty.

verb
take great pride or pleasure in.

I got to attend a magnificent VBAC yesterday and woke up to the first blooms of some morning glory seeds I planted a few weeks ago under my window. A perfect reflection of the parents’ emotions after their little one was safely in their arms, and honestly those of the entire team.

At the #blacklivesmatter Peaceful protest in Lakeland FL . I am a single mom raising a little black boy. When they one day share the images of Art created during these times I hope this speaks just as loudly then as I pray it does now. These senseless killings of black men hit differently when you’re raising one.

@_dddime @thejuiceeboxx saw your tweet this morning! I used to live in a bubble that somehow midwives were not part of the problem. 🤦‍♀️🙄Then I went to midwifery school 😬 and in one day of cultural competency training came to the conclusion that we definitely need more black and brown midwives. Implicit bias training for white midwives just isn’t going to fill the gap.
