To escape the Texas summer heat, Wimberly based photographer Kara Buse and her husband Bryan took a family road trip to Washington State's Olympic National Park, boasting an impressive one million+ acres of sprawling parkland. Wild coastlines and diverse ecosystems are a hallmark of the park, where both glacier topped mountains and temperate rain forests find a home.

Kara kindly offered her travel itinerary to those in the Ruta Maya community looking for a self guided retreat, full of misty beaches with bountiful driftwood, endless evergreen forests, and camp grounds that provide an idyllic setting for morning coffee. The stunning photo journal offers us a glimpse into summer in the Pacific Northwest.

Our Café Jiguaní is a taste of the jungle. Rich, smooth, and vibrant, Jiguaní was inspired by the lush mountains of the Sierra Maestra in Cuba. The boldness of this roast is balanced by a natural sweetness, reminiscent of the espresso found throughout Cuba.

Five Years with the Shark Research and Conservation Program at the University of Miami 07/14/2023

This summer 2023 marks our fifth year of collaboration with the Shark Research and Conservation Program (SRC) at The University of Miami Rosentiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science. Originally founded by Neil Hammerschlag, Ph.D.and now directed by Catherine Macdonald, Ph.D., assistant research professor, SRC conducts conservation-relevant shark research while inspiring scientific literacy and environmental engagement in youth through hands-on field experiences.

Ruta Maya broadly supports student and faculty-led projects exploring topics such as: Eco-physiology of sharks, shark stressors, sharks in urban coastal environments, contaminants in shark tissue, studies of the immune system, reproduction patterns, and the impacts of ocean warming on shark movement and behavior.

SRC brings hundreds of people, mostly school-children, out on research boats to catch, sample, tag and study sharks every year. In 2018, Ruta Maya went on a tagging trip with SRC in South Florida to learn about the process of collecting data. We later “adopted” a Tiger shark named Ezra that we’ve had the opportunity to track through satellite technology.

The Shark Research and Conservation Program makes a special effort to serve communities that have been historically excluded from STEM opportunities, including connecting girls with women scientists through their F.I.N.S. Program (Females in The Natural Sciences). To reach beyond South Florida, SRC also uses a variety of online education tools to communicate shark science to the public. They have been frequently featured on Discovery’s Shark Week and National Geographic’s Shark Fest, contributing years of hands-on experience with sharks to the networks.

The natural world is our greatest inspiration. We’re proud to support an organization on the cutting edge of marine conservation science. To learn more about SRC’s mission visit: www.sharktagging.com.

We're working with Aspen Ideas Festival for a second year this week to support Aspen Ideas: Climate, a 4 day solutions-focused event in Miami, FL designed to connect the public with climate leaders whose ideas and actions are creating a more resilient future. Artists, scientists, young leaders, policy makers, and innovators from around the world are gathering together to showcase tangible solutions to new challenges.

Included in the 2023 program is a tour of the University of Miami SUSTAIN Laboratory wind-wave tank and Reef Lab, which provides scientists and engineers access to a realistic but controlled environment to study the impacts of hurricane and storm surge events on coastal communities. The Coral Reef Futures Lab educates guests on the biology, ecology, and conservation of coral reefs and the impacts of rising ocean temperatures on these ecosystems.

Additional programs include panels, round-tables, field-trips, and expos on renewable energy technologies in food and agriculture, regenerative farming, the future of mobility, sustainable materials in fashion, and more.

We hope everyone is having a great start to the new year!

This upcoming February 8-11, we’ll be sponsoring the 2023 Mesoamerica Meetings at The University of Texas at Austin, an annual symposium that brings together scholars and interested public to study the richness of ancient Mesoamerican art, archaeology, writing, and other aspects of cultural heritage.

This year’s theme, “Waterscapes in Maya Art, Cosmology, and Environment,” will explore water’s centrality in human lives and shed light on climate history of the Maya region and how Maya communities managed water access through cycles of drought and overabundance. Water as a symbol in Maya culture beyond its physical presence, in art and cosmology, will also be discussed. This event is open to the public and will be accessible online and in-person. We are happy to share the continuation of our partnership with The Mesoamerica Center-University of Texas at Austin. Over a decade later, this partnership remains special to us as a small business formed by UT alumni. Supporting Maya research and education in the art and sciences more broadly is a pillar in our public outreach program. We believe that solutions to modern challenges can come from studying indigenous communities past and present, and we’re excited to see what students and faculty at The Mesoamerica Center uncover next.

Oldest Evidence of Maya Calendar Discovered in Guatemala - UT News 12/12/2022

Fragments of the oldest Maya calendar to date were discovered this year in San Bartolo, Guatemala by David Stuart, director of The Mesoamerica Center-University of Texas at Austin. The two fragments were found while excavating murals and "form the notation “7 Deer,” which dates back more than 2,000 years to 300 B.C., several centuries older than previously obtained evidence."

We've been in partnership with The Mesoamerica Center for many years and it's amazing to see their team continue to make discoveries that help us better understand ancient Maya ingenuity.
