Video Infant transplant patient looks back at 9/11 miracle

‘It was the only plane in the sky.’

Thank you to ABC News Live for telling the story of how our Tennessee Donor Services colleagues saved the life of a toddler on 9/11. All civilian planes were grounded, but that didn’t stop the Tennessee team from finding a way to fly the liver from Nashville to the little girl dying in Houston. This story makes us proud to be part of a donation community that goes to work every day of the year to save as many lives as possible, no matter the odds.

Video Infant transplant patient looks back at 9/11 miracle Now 20 years old, Kareena was just an infant when a team of medical professionals and national guardsmen saved her life by delivering a liver for transplant while airports were locked down.

A National Minority Donor Awareness Month "Story of Hope"

Audrey’s brother Henry was a great and kind soul first, and a star athlete second. He was an avid runner who ran for the Wisconsin Runner Racing Team after graduating from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and was crowned the national 5K champion at the USA Men’s Championship in 2003. He wanted nothing more than to spread hope and joy to the people who needed it most. He loved spending time with his sons, helping the homeless, supporting causes he was passionate about and living life to the fullest. His kindness and selflessness only made his untimely passing harder on his family, but it came as no surprise to them that he was a registered organ, eye and tissue donor. Although they miss him tremendously, they are grateful to know that he was able to save eight lives through organ donation and heal countless others through his gifts of tissue donation.

Are you at risk for kidney disease? 08/09/2021

Are you at risk for kidney disease?

Kidneys are the organ most often needed, by the 100,000-plus people on the national transplant waiting list. Disproportionately higher rates of diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease in minority communities, create a special need for kidney donors among these groups. In the U.S., 33% are at risk for #kidneydisease, but most don't know it. Having kidney disease can also increase risk of life-threatening complications from #COVID19.

Take a minute to find out if you're in the 33%.

Faith’s eyesight had been declining for years because of hereditary keratoconus, a condition that causes the cornea to bulge and vision to blur. When her doctor recommended a cornea transplant, she agreed. It wasn’t until she was getting prepped for surgery that she asked where the lenses were “made.” She learned then that the cornea would come from a donor—a young boy had passed away, and his family made the decision to donate his corneas. Faith had a son herself, and she couldn't imagine giving part of him away after such a tragedy. She wondered what it took to give that kind of gift. She thought the family "must be giving out of an abundance of loving…to even think to do that.” At that time, Faith was in survival mode, but she dreamed of the day that she'd feel rich enough in heart to give that abundantly.

11 years after her transplant, her cousin was reaching out to find a kidney donor for her husband. A realization hit Faith like lightning and she immediately responded, “Me!” The testing took place, and she was a match, but there were still other people to convince. Faith’s parents were initially opposed to her donating a kidney. They said it was too risky and tried to talk her out of it. At work, she struggled to find paid sick leave for the surgery and recovery period. Deciding to donate and following through was a chance to live life on her own terms and do what she truly believed in. The surgery was a success and in the process of donating her kidney, Faith found the strength she’d so admired in her donor family within herself. #DonateLife #NMDAM

People of color are more likely to be in need of a lifesaving transplant. Patients from communities of color make up 60% of the national transplant waiting list. According to @NIDDKgov, Black/African Americans, Hispanics and Pacific Islanders are 3x more likely than White Americans to suffer from kidney failure, often as the result of high blood pressure and other conditions. Although patients in need of a transplant can find organ matches from donors of other ethnic groups, having a diverse donor pool makes it easier to find a match for all patients. #DonateLife #NMDAM

Transplant Games of America - Reimagined

The "reimagined" 2020 Transplant Games of America are in full swing! While the pandemic has changed the look and timing of the games (the 2020 games are being held in 2021), the Olympic spirit lives on.

From July 16 through July 19, in communities across the country, competitors will complete their events safely at home, then submit their results to the Transplant Games of America. All competitors submitting results will receive a TGA Gold medal.

An online Event Hub will allow participants to view Signature Events, broadcast from the New Jersey Meadowlands, host site of the 2020 Games. These events include the opening ceremony, living donor celebration and a donor tribute. This online connection will allow anyone who has always wanted to attend the Transplant Games, to be a part of the event.
