~ Lannaya Drum & Dance Ensemble Performer / Company Teacher.
~ Field of knowledge: Traditional Guinean dance and music.
Mami is an accomplished West African dancer from Guinea, and Lannaya member! She's worked as a professional dance/drum artist since the age of ten. In Guinea, she was a member of several professional dance companies where she taught, performed and toured for ceremonies, celebrations and other special occasions. Mami has danced, trained and performed throughout the US since 2021, and excitedly now calls Austin, TX home.
5 more days till the Festival!
A Behind-the-Scenes nugget from our first workshop with PRFD:
When PRFD's director Dr. Tekina-eirú Maynard Prfdance invited us to collaborate, she emphasized why this cultural exchange is significant by saying, "While Puerto Ricans proudly celebrate our Afro-Boricua traditions, many don't know a lot about our African ancestors, or the Motherland where they came from." Seeing the musical connections and working directly with their team has been a treasure.

Shiny smiles from a few years back, on this day!

We were notified recently that Lannaya will be recommended again for inclusion in Texas Commission on the Arts’ 2024-2026 Texas Touring Roster! We are immensely thankful for this recognition and support to help share West African drum/dance with Texans in their own neighborhoods!

Did you know?
Lannaya specifically performs Celebratory West African drum/dance, an ancient, rhythmic whole body dance-form traditionally performed to polyrhythmic live drumming. This drum/dance style is done to:
~ Honor (an occasion, such as a holiday).
~ Mark (something, like an anniversary).
We perform and teach year-round. See link in our Bio / About page to book! (and check out Mami Sayon Camara in the video!)
During our first meeting with Puerto Rican Folkloric Dance Company, it was exciting to hear the many similarities between West African and Boricua rhythms. Using our two teams' collective knowledge as a base, we created the beautiful collaboration piece that will debut at Celebrando 2024 - Salsa & Heritage Festival, Madre Patria África on June 9th!
This spring we served 4,295 community members! Our school show is a fun way to share cultural education with the leaders of our future. The seed starts with them!
Here's an action shot of the Macru dance party at our last school show!
Macru is a dance and rhythm from the Susu people of Guinea, West Africa. The Susu and Mandenyi people are known for this fast-paced dance by all ages to showcase their abilities. Macru often follows Yankadi, a slow tempo dance and rhythm.
