Myth Vs Truth
"You shouldn't change your toothbrush every 3 months if it looks good."
Fact: Even if your toothbrush looks good, it might have been stored improperly and thus filled with bacteria. If you've used your toothbrush regularly, it's not very likely that the bristles are in perfect condition. So make it a habit to change your toothbrush or brush head every 3 months. Also, don't forget to change it after you've been sick!!

"You shouldn't brush too close to the gum line."
Fact: Yes, we should try to protect our gums, but not brushing close to the gum line is not a solution; as it hinders the proper cleaning of teeth. Bacteria often hang out where your tooth meets your gum. Just make sure your toothbrush bristles can bend and do not forget to keep the brush at a 45- degree angle and avoid brushing hard!

"Toothaches are no cause for worry if they stop."
Fact: If you are experiencing a toothache, but the the pain subsides, you should still see your dentist as soon as you can. Cavities often cause toothaches, as untreated cavities can reach a nerve inside your tooth, causing pain.
If the pain stops, the problem has not disappeared, but rather the cavity has killed the nerve inside your tooth.

Dr. Smitherman recalls fond memories during elementary school when her mom would bring her along to dental hygiene school as one of her first patients.

We started Perspective Dental because we saw an opportunity to change the patient care experience. Here at Perspective Dental, we see treatment from our patient’s perspective, giving each patient a unique and personalized experience. Dr. Ashley Smitherman is a native Texan from the small community Franklin. She was introduced to the field of dentistry at an early age as her mom works as a dental hygienist. Dr. Smitherman recalls fond memories during elementary school when her mom would bring her along to dental hygiene school as one of her first patients.

Dr. Smitherman received her undergraduate degree in biomedical engineering from Texas A&M University. She then completed her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston. She is a member of the American Dental Association, Academy of General Dentistry, Texas Dental Association, Academy of Gp Orthodontics and American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine. Always looking to keep up with the current trends and innovations in dentistry, she has completed over 100 hours of continuing education courses within the past year.

Dr. Smitherman currently resides in Austin with her wife, Charlsie, and their son, Parker, and daughters Reid and Ellis.
