I don't listen to trainers that haven't worked dogs IN the shelter. The work we do with a shelter dog, in a shelter, is a completely different world than private dog training. A shelter dog doesn't have a relationship to rely on, until they're adopted. They don't have a quiet, stress-free place to work them. We're training dogs in a warzone with limited resources, and limited time. There is no ONE perfect way to work a dog, especially in a shelter. Our behavior team shows up every day and tries really hard. I'm happy to be a part of figuring this out. Any way, Fennigan needs someone willing to put in the work, outside of this shelter setting. Be a hero and adopt/foster this senior, so I don't have to. Seniors are a great way to get involved without all the potty training, strenuous exercise, and destructive behaviors of a younger dog. There are a lot of seniors that ended up at a shelter through no fault of their own, and don't deserve to spend their golden years on concrete floors. is an organization that highlights some of the frosted faces in the Austin area.
Everyday, tens of thousands of animal welfare workers get up to go to work. They're scarred from bites and overworked and absolutely exhausted, but they wake up a little earlier and leave a little later, because they want to save lives. Everyday I get to work at is so freaking incredible and the people I work with are changing the world for pets in Texas. I'm so happy to call myself a shelter worker. To all the folks that choose this incredibly hard job, I love y'all.
