Now Boarding: 100 Business Leaders Fly to Yelp HQ for Meeting of the Minds - Yelp

https://www.yelpblog.com/2016/10/now-boarding-100-business-leaders-fly-yelp-hq-meeting-minds

Love them or hate them, either way, I'm going in to the belly of the beast known as @yelp.

Almost as partisan as this years Presidential election, are the feelings and opinions folks have toward the sometimes controversial yet universally respected small business review website Yelp. Many empires have been championed and built, and yes, some businesses slandered and destroyed, like it or not, everyday is election day for small businesses in America thanks to Yelp. Which party you side with likely depends on your experience. Small business owners tend to have the strongest opinions, yet consumers weld all the power. The mystery behind yelps filtering algorithm that seemingly legitimizes customer reviews appears to be the one issue that has bi-partisan support. For those who believe yelp engages in "pay-to-play" activities I can tell you, I have never paid a single cent to yelp, yet my positive reviews are overwhelmingly not filtered out and held ransom as some might suggest. Whether negative reviews would be filtered out if I did pay for advertising I can't speak to. I'm going to speculate with the utmost confidence not.

To further support this, I have been vetted and selected by a committee at Yelp HQ as one of 100 top rated businesses in North America. On November 15th and 16th Yelp is gathering 2016's top 100 businesses at HQ in San Francisco for their annual Coast-to-Coast Business Leaders Conference for a meeting of the minds. #yelpc2c. I am humbled and honored to be a Yelp Ambassador for the best city in North America, #AustinTexas, a city who's glue is the small independent business. My primary motivation to participate is to better understand how to maintain the integrity of Yelps online review process. Well, an all expense paid trip to San Francisco is rather enticing too.

I take very seriously advocating for Austin's small business community. I'm certain there are many more deserving of this honor, I hope to adequately represent. Thanks to Yelp and the great people of #Austin, acquiring new customers is in no way a motivating factor for my participation at this time. Ironically I have been hesitant to share this honor with the general public. Taking on new customers especially at this time of the year could be a dis-service to my existing loyal customers. I have purposefully postponed all PR and press to give my loyal customers the opportunity to get all of their bookings made before a public announcement was made. Just in case Luci, my @yelpaustin Market Manager gets me on the news or something. It's been impressive to see some of the PR efforts made in other cities across America. So if you are a current customer I urge you to make your next two appointments finishing out the year right now. As most of you already know the schedule gets even tighter this time of year with-out any press. Especially from a giant like yelp. Thank you yelp.

Initially I questioned not only what I could take away by attending, but what I might bring. The latter ultimately was the deciding factor. This is a testimony of what happens when yelp works too good. I have only been a barber since 2008, in Austin since 2013. I have built two successful barbershops in 8 years. It's no fluke. Yelp is my champion. I am currently a one man show, unable to scale my business up at this time. Therefore I have a unique set of problems created by yelp that I hope to address. Sure you say, "good problem to have". But its still a problem. And no, I refuse to raise prices again. I am hoping to bring an alternate perspective to Coast-to-Coast. I understand yelp has paid advertising for those wanting to energize their business. But what about us small "land-locked" businesses looking to throttle down? Even if only temporary. I've had no real interaction with yelp aside from my local yelp Market Manager doing her job, checking in on me occasionally. I do know yelp has a wealth of tools designed to help. My hopes are to find creative ways to even better serve my existing customers for now. Bringing this unique challenge to the forefront so not to alienate businesses like mine and allow us to still utilize yelp and their tools even when not looking to grow is my hope. The best news is that there is another @KirbytheBarber coming on board about March 2017. My son, #KirbytheBarberson, who will be attending Coast-to-Coast with me, is the next generation of yelp small business leaders. #familybusiness. He is currently attending #modernbarbercollege in Houston Texas.

So go make your appointments for November and December if you haven't already. You will notice I am working both Saturdays before and after the #yelpc2c to make up for time out of the shop. I apologize for being out the week before Thanksgiving. I am confident that it is time well spent investing in the health and future of the Kirby the Barber brand. Thank you for your support. I owe it all to you, the customer. I hear you. As always #keepaustinweird

Respectfully,

Kirby the Barber
