Ice or Heat???
In our practice we're frequently asked 'which should I use- ice or heat?'. A good acronym to remember for soft tissue injuries is R.I.C.E. When you suffer an injury such as a sprain, strain or muscle tear the damaged tissue may bruise, swell or bleed. Immediate first aid in the form of R.I.C.E. can prevent complications and help you heal faster. REST is vital to protect the injured muscle. Immediately stop playing and avoid putting weight on the injured part. ICE the injury. Cold provides short-term pain relief and limits swelling by reducing blood flow to the area. Use an ice pack or frozen peas wrapped in a thin towel and place on the injured part for 15-20 minutes only. Allow the area to re-warm before applying the ice pack again. COMPRESSION helps limit and reduce swelling which speeds healing. An ACE bandage or Rock Tape works nicely. ELEVATION of the injured area will also help control swelling. Healing of soft tissue injuries occurs as the damaged tissue is replaced by collagen, more commonly known as scar tissue. After 1-2 days of treatment you can typically begin gentle stretching exercises. This will help reduce excess scar tissue formation. Light massage therapy is also beneficial in helping reduce excess scar tissue formation. Our office has Registered Massage Therapists who are specifically trained in soft tissue injuries. If we can help you please call us. We hope this information has been useful to you. Have a safe and happy Labor Day!
