“How much” communication does one need to have in order to be able to advocate for himself or herself? “What words” does a person need to know in order to be able to assert his or her priorities?

Join Deann O'Lenick, Language Through AAC - Hear MY Voice at the August 11th A Look Ahead Conference to get answers to these questions and more!

Describing for others how one advocates for himself/herself gives the power of self-advocacy to the individual, where it belongs.

The presenter will provide a wide variety of examples, both personal and professional, all to highlight the possible ways people self-advocate and ways those in the person’s immediate circle can assist in the messages being heard.

Green Oaks Education and Support is hosting an Open House from 9:00AM to 11:30AM on March 26th. No RSVP is required and you are free to come and go. Come learn about the programs offered by Green Oaks for both children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Registration for summer programs, as well as enrollment for the 2018-19 school year are going on now!

Green Oaks Education and Support is Christian-based educational programming for individuals with intellectual disabilities who do not have serious medical involvement or significant behavior challenges. Green Oaks School was developed for children, teens and young adults who have not graduated from high school. Green Oaks Adult Learning (GOAL) was designed for adults who have completed their secondary education.

The primary focus of Green Oaks School is to teach at the level of ability and interest of our students. We offer math, reading, writing and basic social studies. In addition, the students receive instruction in fine arts, computer skills, daily living skills and physical education. Our students are afforded the opportunity to develop life-long friendships and often make great social gains in addition to academic growth.

The Green Oaks Adult Learning (GOAL) program is designed for adults who seek an environment that focuses on continuing education. They, along with their families, desire participation in a program with a continuing emphasis on academics, social skills, vocational training and additional life skills. The primary objective of the GOAL program is to provide an atmosphere of acceptance and appreciation for the gifts of the individual in a place where opportunities for continued growth and development are available. In addition, GOAL offers adults with intellectual delays a place for social interaction with their peers.

Learners in the GOAL Program participate in developing their own Personal Development Plans, which are individualized. Apart from the GOAL program, many individuals are involved in outside activities such as volunteering, employment and recreation. Green Oaks School is committed to tailoring our GOAL program to meet the needs of each student. Participants can enroll for part or full days, from one to five days a week. We will be happy to offer suggestions to help you to solve transportation issues.

Green Oaks Education and Support is also in the early stages of developing a new program, Green Oaks Life Prep, for individuals seeking a college-like atmosphere in which they can focus on intensive vocational training and independent living skills.

Look at this amazing 💌 “After many months of prompting and working through fine motor skills and staying consistent as a team, we have seen so much improvement in many aspects of this client's day-to-day skills. Going from requiring assistance from technicians to being able to grip and squeeze tweezers to pick things up independently and becoming more successful in toileting and feeding goals. Fine motor skills, such as gripping items with tweezers, are super important as we use these to build upon to learn other more complex skills such as using utensils and opening lids to items while continuing to gain that independence with them as well. Totally on a roll lately!” -Team Lead 💜
