Its been a little over four years since we moved back to Austin. I've been practicing here long enough now that a significant portion of my business comes from families I've seen before and referrals from families I've worked with. So, Thank You Austin for welcoming me back. I guess you can come home again! :-)
Fantastic report. Most of my work comes from psycho-educational testing of children who have been denied services. I see many seriously disabled students who need to be in special education and haven't been properly placed. Its really important to get this done early because there are very clearly some developmental windows for learning core academic skills of reading, writing, spelling and math that begin to close around the 4th grade. Students will never really develop any academic fluency if they haven't reached it by then. RTI does nothing but delay necessary services.
Denied: How Texas keeps tens of thousands of children out of special education The state has saved billions of dollars while denying vital support to children with disabilities, a Houston Chronicle investigation has found.
Dear Friends of Newsom Psychological and the Austin Learning Assessment Center:
I am happy to announce that I am moving my private practice to a new location beginning August 1st. The old location was good to us, but we already outgrew the relatively limited space. The new office, conveniently located on Shoal Creek just north of Steck, is also closer to major highways, so it is easier to get to. The best news though, is that we are sharing space with some of the best child therapists in Austin. Led by psychologist Jenny Fullerton, Ph.D. (of the Austin OCD and Anxiety Clinic) this group offers expert counseling and treatment for the full spectrum of psychological disorders. I genuinely look forward to working with them and to continuing my collaboration with the Karnik Institute (Learning Disorders, ADHD and Autism) in coming years.
My new office address is

For the past year and a half, I have had the privilege of working with the Karnik Institute in Austin, Texas. Dr. Dilip Karnik was the first pediatric neurologist in Austin and has now founded the Karnik Institute to help children who have difficulty in school due to learning disabilities, ADHD, Autism and other co-morbid conditions. My focus on evaluating students who have these conditions made me a good fit for this growing organization, and the opportunity to work with more challenging clients has continued to energize my work with children. The staff at "KI" as we call it for short is top notch. Unfortunately, KI closed in the Fall of 2017. You can still get all the great assessment services at NewsomPsychological.com

Here is an excellent article about alcoholism treatment. The one size fits all model really needs to go away.
The Bad Science of Alcoholics Anonymous Its faith-based 12-step program dominates treatment in the United States. But researchers have debunked central tenets of AA doctrine and found dozens of other treatments more effective.
After moving to Austin, I had the opportunity to begin working with students who have a variety of learning problems through a contract with some educational consultants. This was the first opportunity I had in a few years to do full independent educational evaluations. The advancements that have been made since my graduate training are really amazing. We now have instruments, informed by Neuropsychology, that can pinpoint the underlying cognitive deficits that cause learning problems. If diagnosed in time, we also have multiple evidence-based interventions that help children learn that simply weren't available 20 years ago. Its a great time to be in the educational psychology business. If you know anyone who needs help with learning problems, give me a call. I can help.
Skipping ahead, many years after graduating from Texas Tech, I found myself running a large psychological services company in Houston, Texas. At its height, I contracted with 26 providers and had two fulltime office staff. I am proud to this day about the services we provided. What we did was unprecedented in Texas. We provided convenient, high quality services to clients who found themselves caught up in the CPS system. I opened offices in the poorest neighborhoods in Houston when no other providers were within miles of where they lived. Because they could access our services, we saved a lot of families. When the family couldn't be preserved, we helped save the children and supported the parents as they tried to salvage their broken lives. That company contracted as DFPS cut funding for the services we provided. Eventually, DFPS started acting like a mismanaged care company and the restrictions on our practice made it impossible to continue. Over a period of two years, I shut down that business and when the opportunity came about to move back to Austin, we did. That move led to my next big career opportunity. I'll say more about that in days to come.
When I was looking for graduate schools in psychology, I wanted a program that was high quality, but human. I was newly married and some graduate programs were notorious for the brutal treatment of their students. You would think that psychologists would know better, but one of the first lessons you should learn about life is that people are the same no matter where you go. I was fortunate to find an APA accredited program right here in Texas that had a long history of excellence as well as a supportive attitude toward their students. My training and degree in Counseling Psychology from the Department of Psychology at Texas Tech has served me well. As my career grew, the example they set for me has guided my work as a supervisor as well as in the clinical work I do.
Beginnings. I had secretly wanted to be in the helping professions for years, but wasn't at all sure it would suit me. I got some really great counseling in my mid 20s when I was going through a pretty difficult time. That inspired me to take the risk of changing professions and going back to college. Now, part of the work I do is Aptitude Testing and Career Counseling. I especially enjoy helping people get to know their character strengths and understand how they fit with educational and career choices.
Its a new page. Come back and watch it grow. :-)
