In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, Matt Rios, one of our Graphic Designers, shares the inspiration behind his art—rooted in rich tradition, family memories, and cultural symbols that celebrate strength, beauty, and heritage.
“These paper mache sugar skulls were inspired by the Mexican celebration of Dia de los Mu***os (Day of the Dead), which is a day to remember our loved ones that have passed. In Corpus Christi, there is an annual celebration that I’ve participated in selling leather goods or art. Sugar skulls are made to represent our loved ones that have passed. Each one has their own personality. One of beauty and softness, another that is silly with a little hat, and one that has a “rougher” side to it.
Roosters have always been present in my life. Growing up, mi abuela (grandmother) had a chicken coop that we would tend to while she care for me as a child. The rooster was also my mother’s favorite animal and she had rooster art and decor all over the house. The Rooster in Hispanic culture represents pride and courage.
A lot of my art is inspired by textures and I have explored that with different representations from Mexican culture. The armor of an Aztec warrior, the dress of a Folklorico dancer and tattoos. Also in my artwork, I tend to show the different characteristics of a woman and a man. The elegance and beauty of a woman, and the strength and “machismo” of a man.”

Each year on Hi, How Are You Day, January 22nd, we celebrate the birthday of the late Daniel Johnston, a musician, artist and global advocate for mental health. 🌎
The University of Texas Sophomore and ACC's Callaway House Austin Community Assistant Isabelle Flores spoke about how she and her peers are able to take the skills she has learned from the Hi, How Are You Project to support our residents through their college journeys. “If something’s wrong, we notice that, and we reach out to them. That extra step that it teaches us is what really pushes us to the next level, because then, the residents see that somebody actually cares about them, it builds a stronger community,” Flores said.

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” - Martin Luther King, Jr.
Today our offices nationwide are closed so we can all take time to reflect on our shared experiences and remember we are always better when we take the time to listen and support one another. It is through shared conversations and experiences that we celebrate our differences and fight for equality.
