Yoga used to help kids cope with violence in Chicago

This is so important. For these kids, violence is always around them, everyday. Everyday there is a large likihood that they will be exposed to an event that will further traumatize and/or exacerbate the trauma reactions they are already experiencing. And to have teachers from their neighborhood, who look like them, is so powerful. This week in my classes we are talking about the power to choose and the power to arise to the truth that rises up within you in each moment. To choose honestly and in a way that is authentic to you, as you are, in the moment.

Oftentimes in a yoga class there is the temptation to choose what is right for someone else rather than what is right for you. To choose the pose variation that is too advanced or go beyond your limits to stretch to a point of pain.

When we honor where we are and choose to accept who we are in the moment, our authentic voice and brilliance shines through.

I thought this photo expressed this point well.

On the mat is just the beginning. Let's take these ideas off the mat and into the world with us.

How childhood trauma affects health across a lifetime

A powerful talk that I truly appreciate. With history working as a therapist at three different schools in NYC, I witnessed too many children labeled with ADHD and Oppositional Defiant Disorder when they were merely experiencing trauma reactions. I've always taken the approach that you must rule out PTSD before diagnosing any other condition.

Unresolved trauma is at the forefront of so many other issues: substance abuse, eating disorders, chronic depression/dysthymia etc.

"Early adversity dramatically affects health across the lifetime."

Yoga and meditation have been scientifically proven at this to point to lessen trauma reactions and reunite trauma survivors with their bodies and become whole again.

Yoga in schools is a must. An absolute must.

While the moon is the shadow side of the sun's light, it can be associated with fear. Yet, the moon is the light in the darkness- it guides us through the dark corners of our subconscious minds.

During a full moon we experience increased clarity and abilities to fulfill our desires when we trust our intuition and are open and receptive to what presents itself.

I cannot think of a man who more fully embodied the spirit of a yogi, than this man. A peaceful and devoted warrior for love, peace, union and equality.

Some of my favorite words of his taken from different speeches:

Faith is taking the first step even when you don't see the whole staircase. Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter. Guided Moving Meditation- Evoking the Water Element in the Flow with Nityda Bhakti of The Yoga Wellness Space Hi Yogis, I...


Present moment focused, I typically strive to be. But there is healing that comes from reaching back into our past and re-embracing, wholeheartedly, a moment, a part of us, that brought us joy. Re-experiencing past joy is a beautiful opportunity to reflect on our path- where we've come and are devoted to going.

I loved this moment, which for me symbolized growth through change, embracing the discomfort of not knowing and surrendering to having fun in the moment. I loved this moment, where discomfort shape-shifted into overwhelming comfort and the realization that no matter where the present moment is located, I can and will feel at home if I desire for that.

I loved this moment, when the nervousness of uncertainty evolved into ownership of a decision to move forward, to live life, to care less and more at the same time.

Reflection- 2016. Moving forward- 2016. Loving even more fully than ever before- 2016. Living like never before- 2016. Love ya’ll (so happy I can say ya’ll again and not have people look at me like I’m crazy). :D Be yourself- 2016.
Embrace your path- 2016.


Yoga in 15 Minutes - Yoga to Increase Flexibility, Session 2

I took a class today in Austin, TX, my new home, with an amazing teacher named Erinn Lewis. At the end of class we were asked to sit across from a partner and do an eye-gazing meditation in which you look into the eyes of the person across from you, not looking away. We did this for about 5 minutes. It may have been shorter, it may have been longer.

I hadn't done this practice in years.

It is incredibly powerful and equally challenging to look into another's eye-, a stranger's eyes- while a gifted teacher asks you to write this person a love letter and to tell this person with your eyes what you wish for them. While the teacher asks you to mentally ask the person across from you to see you for who you are, to let go of your flaws, and that this person please see your beauty and not judge you for your differences.

What felt like five minutes might have been less; it may have been more.

There is an intense level of vulnerability that arises through this practice. Emotions rose and fell, crested and cascaded. Somtimes it was hard to breathe, other times it wasn't. At times my mind, my body, felt anxious; at others calm, receptive, and totally at peace. I have never felt more naked while being totally clothed. And yet, this challening practice ended with a hug and a new aquaintance that has the potential to become a friend.

I offer you to leave your own comfort zone this year. No one can lift you out from the muddy waters of your own struggles and insecurities but you. And it does require that you be vulnerable, not only with yourself but in the company of others. But truly, we are all battling something at any given time. We are never truly alone. We can let our defenses keep us from connecting to ourselves and others, or we can be a little less caught up in ourselves and be in the moment.

My favorite zen proverb is this: The obstacle is the path.

So this year, cheers to obstacles, cheers to struggles. Cheers to triumphs and easefullness all the same. May we walk calmly our path and embrace what it holds for us. May we go in deeper through our yoga and meditation practices. May we sustain eye contact- an intense connection- with another, a little bit longer than we'd like; and may our hearts and our egos be softened by that. May we experience our own humaness- flaws and beauty- fully and with acceptance. May we recognize ourselves in others. May we experience peace. May we experience love.
