Don't you love this image? Well, you can own the original painting!!! It is 36x48, an original painting by the wonderful Susannah Blanton. It was used for our poster in 2015 and it is one of our faves.
It is a very striking painting in person, and would look fantastic on your wall...talk about a conversation piece. We hate to sell, it but... Send us a PM if you are interested. Obviously, this is one of a kind! It's a very reasonable $450 investment in your future happiness!!!

Portela Na Avenida Clara Nunes Homenagem 2020
More REAL SAMBA, again from my escola de samba/samba school in Rio, Portela. This is an homage they did to the incredible singer Clara Nunes who is singing in this samba about the glories of Portela parading down the avenue. Watch the white eagle (Portela's spirit animal) toward the end which is rising up, having had to be lowered to go beneath that horizontal bar which is full of TV cameras.
In Feb 2000, I flew 13 of these drummers to play at Carnaval in Austin. Those guys told me Carnaval Austin was the best party they'd ever played...thereafter I was a hero with this group and they invited me to parade with them in 2001!
Anyway, pay attention as the energy builds, till, at 1:47, the heavy artillery enters, surdos, repiques and tamborins, quaking the rafters! I'll post a video in the comments of Clara performing this, though, sadly, only lip-synching...

Yesterday was the 45th anniversary of the "birth" of Carnaval in Austin, at least as it is known today. Here is the first poster! But I have to acknowledge my predecessors in organizing this party, George Hussein Entenman and Ileana Casanova who worked hard to keep this thing going before I got my grubby hands on it. And to James Frank Hughes (RIP) for twisting my arm and threatening to kill me if I did not do this thing in 1978...wish he still attended... Y'all made this possible, and you know you are always "on the list" should you wander into Austin on the right weekend by some chance!
Hard to believe it was 45 years ago that we first (well, there were a few years before "us") cranked up this little party at the old Boondocks Club, later Club Foot, and now the basement of some office tower on E. 4th Street. Pictured here is our very first poster, quickly drawn by legendary Austin artist Micael Priest.

65 degrees on Saturday!!!! I know it's cold now, BUT, we will heat up the city regardless! I remember, at least five times in the past, Carnaval has happened in snow, sleet, ice and many times in temps way below freezing. 65 degrees on Saturday will seem very tropical once the music starts!
