When her long-time senior clients could no longer get to the hospital, Dawn Berry, hospital manager at VCA Lafayette Animal Hospital, partnered with a local Meals on Wheels program to bring the hospital to them.

And that's when she noticed something concerning. Some seniors, faced with financial challenges, chose to feed their pets rather than feed themselves. She knew she had to do something.

It was a risky procedure. But today, that kitten is a happy, healthy cat known as "Captain Banz." His grateful owners renamed him for the veterinarian who they could never thank enough.

What should I feed my senior pet?

VCA Board Certified Veterinary Nutritionist Lori Prantil, MPS, DVM, DACVN explains that different species and breeds age differently and have different longevity expectations, so there is no defined age that qualifies a pet as senior.

There is no specific dietary recommendation for senior pets. Dr. Prantil recommends regular lab work and examinations so your veterinarian can pick up on any changes in your pet's health and make recommendations for dietary changes if necessary.

If you opt to take your pet trick-or-treating this Halloween, keep them close on a non-retractable leash.

Also, be mindful of your surroundings, as your pet could become fearful or aggressive if approached by excited children in costumes.

For more tips, ask your VCA veterinarian.

10/30/2022

When it comes to Halloween candy, there’s a lot more trick than treat involved for your pet!

Chocolate, gum and foil wrappers can cause upset stomachs or poisoning. To be safe, keep them on their regular diet.

Ask your VCA veterinarian for more holiday tips and tricks.

Timeline photos 10/28/2022

While they may be cute, costumes are better suited to humans and not pets. If you decide to dress them up this Halloween, make sure costumes are loose enough to allow free movement, but snug enough to prevent tripping.

Also, be aware of choking hazards, like buttons! For more safety tips, call your VCA veterinarian.

10/27/2022

Decorate your home with your pet in mind this Halloween.

While pumpkins are non-toxic, they can cause upset stomachs if consumed in large quantities and if lit, can cause burns. Hang decorative lights out of reach, as cables can cause electrocution.

Consult your VCA veterinarian for more holiday tips.
